I don't understand the Bible

outhouse

Atheistically
Its extremely dynamic.

Exactly.

I was trying to explain this the best I could.

Many passages in the bible, the true context is lost in English translation, but most is lost due to our lives being so night and day different then theirs.

Some context we will never recover or know for sure.

Yes, and you also said to RedDragon94 "But I understand how it goes, I have the same feelings as you towards other faiths", and you have many times pointed out your particular antipathy towards all religions. That is stating your position honestly, but its still confusing to mix historical and fundamentalist interpretations and then present the result as a historically informed one.

I have one goal here and in all my studies. That is the truth.

I have problems with apologetic rhetoric in all religions, but feel in my own personal opinion Judaism and Christianity hold more possible truth then say islam, I view it as plagiarizing more then others. I find no historical value in my personal interest in later copied faiths.

Many will not choose to study in depth to learn the truth, I understand this, but I do not hold antipathy towards religion. I hold antipathy to ignorance in some followers that hold certainties they know nothing of. [not directed at you]

So its not the religion I have problems with. Its how some use them.

That's because John 1-1 is also confusing.

Please read the whole page http://api.viglink.com/api/click?fo...ligiousForums.com#post-4500371&txt=1 John 1:1

And see if this will shed some light on my post and J1-1
Ok I have read it now and my head hurts. The comments don't all agree with each other and some seem to focus on entirely different things.

I think that thousands of years ago ancient Palestine was a tiny place almost like an island, and multiple invasions nurtured a special kind of fraternity there. There was a realization that life had balance to it and rules and there were extremes to avoid. In that place there was a realization that all things and all people were connected, not separate; and there was good will for everyone. Much later this culture met with Persia's monotheism and interacted well. It was not long before the two ideas were thought of as the same idea, that God was indeed above all and in all and through all. Its actually not much different from the realization people have today: that there is one Earth, one universe, one sky for all of us to breathe and nothing we do is truly independent from others. Everything we do affects someone else and ourselves. Like then as now, people realize that there need to be rules that everyone follows for the good of all; and some people now just like then see a power in it all and through it all, like a huge intelligence. They wonder (or we wonder) if for example the entire universe isn't smarter than us. While this is conjecture its not terribly far fetched to suppose that people only 5000 years ago were somewhat like us.

That is respectable. I don't have goals here myself and am simply an unemployed busybody, but I do care about fundamentalists. I come from a fundamentalist background, and I don't look forward to the wholesale destruction fundamentalists will face when they finally careen into a reality that they are unprepared for just as I have done.

Exactly.

In some cases it best not to focus on exact meaning, and try and get a sense of the book in whole.

We can try and understand, as much as possible, but we don't throw baby out with the bath water.

Well put.

They were trying top understand the world around them, and were grasping at straws trying to explain it with the mythology they were raised with.

Add to that, were only getting a small fraction of a glimpse from the past as these text only reflect life in the Diaspora after the fact.

In the NT. They were explaining what Jesus meant to them personally, and we have different perspectives to add value. No one community was right or wrong, it was just their view.

As long as we avoid the literal interpretation hanging on ever word we can understand more, as they were not writing that way.

One thing that really advanced my overall knowledge was learning what rhetorical prose was. All of the NT was written in rhetorical prose, its sole purpose was not to write history like we do today. They had and used artistic freedom with the sole purpose of persuading listeners to the core truth in the text. The details were not as important as the core.

Is Christianity supposed to make sense?
Not to everyone. It's a revealed religion. No amount of study can help if you aren't chosen (or want) to understand.
If so, why are the concepts the Bible presents so foreign?
I wouldn't think that love and forgiveness were that 'foreign'? Here's the thing. If you want to be a literalist about scriptures then you have a hard road trying to justify reality (like science) with what you read. Some accomplish that, but it's not that pretty. For me, I see the Scriptures as a blog of man looking for God. They even use it to justify their biases, phobias and even hate. Check out how they blamed God for their own blood thirstiness in the OT. Unfortunately, some see God as either a scapegoat or a spiritual bell boy. I'll stick with the God is Love scenario.

I read on down to John 1:14. How does the Word become flesh?
Some of the most beautiful imagery ever written. Traditionally, everyone wanted to turn God into some sort of rule maker. Look at all the rules in the OT. You see, the "Word of God" concept is a pretty big thing to the legalists. Here the writer is pointing out that the Word of God isn't written down anywhere: it's the Jesus. Unfortunately, (#2) many Christians have turned the New Testament into yet another rule book. The book of Galatians is all about people doing this and it contains my favorite passage: 'The only thing that counts is Faith expressing itself through Love.' If you want to really understand the Bible, learn to use it to love others. That's the only rule you need. :D

Without doubt the most whiny and infantile post that I have seen on RF. Yes it is a difficult book, lots of books are. Grow up, make a decision, it is either trash or stick with it. If you have problems with specific parts raise specific posts do the research or quit.
Lastly, "like I keep reading the Bible" . No you either do or you do not. Sloppy talk breeds sloppy minds.
Is it necessary to be so damn rude?

If so, why are the concepts the Bible presents so foreign? For instance, I was reading in the Gospel of John and the first verse I come to makes a claim that makes zero sense. (John 1:1) How can something or someone never be created yet simply exist?
I read on down to John 1:14. How does the Word become flesh? How does the Holy Spirit come upon the virgin Mary so that she conceives?
I don't like being stupid or kept in the dark about the how of things. Christianity may not be my religion if its God keeps his people in the dark about everything. Don't tell me that I don't have enough faith. If 2 Timothy 3:7 is correct why is it like I keep reading the Bible and nothing it says even resonates. Why am I not learning anything new? I'm starting to hate everything about Christianity.

That's is factually an unsupportable opinion.

You go yo church to learn from those who have knowledge, you cannot ever possess it without study.

Many just think they understand while being in the dark their whole lives.

Example. Do you understand the parable of a mustard seed in context? Can you please explain us what that parable means from your "revealed" what ever that means.

Call it a difference of cultures. Where I come from it is called straight talking and if you think that's rude you have led a sheltered life. The man who started the post took it in good grace and unlike you earned my respect

No, I haven't lived a sheltered life and I hardly care if you respect me or not.

One thing that does annoy me about Christianity is the tendency of its adherents to 1. use the Gospels, written by unknown authors thousands of years ago, as factual evidence against skeptics. Obviously this is circular reasoning. And/or 2. resorting to vague, metaphorical, poetic speech in order to avoid admitting that their claims are unfalsifiable. I am a Christian, but I would never use any scripture, circular reasoning, judgment, or arguments from ignorance to try to justify my faith. IMHO, it's disrespectful and pointless. But, don't let scripture prevent you from at least appreciating the spirit of Jesus' teachings.

There's little sense to the Bible.

Diametrically opposing personalities of God between Old Testament and New Testament.

Pauline Christianity vs The disciples.version.

Unknown authorship, yet it's somehow the inerrant book of God for some reason.

Getting personal doesn't help the progress of the conversation. We all learn a lot more when we stick to being critical of ideas and not each other. I am guilty of it too sometimes, but I think there is good reason for all of us to just make our arguments without lowering ourselves to being unnecessarily cruel. It really is pretty telling of our ability to reason, as it is lowering ourselves to pettiness.

And, no, demanding respect is the opposite of cowardice. He had an obligation to call you out, inho.

There was no intention to be rude, and I would point out that the poster kindly said thank you. The insult appears to be in the minds of others.
If @RedDragon94 was upset I am truly sorry but I am a straight talker.

Sorry RedDragon94 I do not any longer read the Bible. My comment as quoted was referring to the inappropriate use of the term "like".

I personally think that just about no one understands the bible, they think they do but they don't.

If I had a nickel for the various explanations that countlessly abound.....

It's a solid givin that no one understands the Bible nor will anyone ever. Only one's with a clue are it's long dead authors whomever they were.
