I feel terrible!

I feel terrible! This morning, while driving to work, I hit a squirrel. It dashed in front of my car's front wheels so fast I had no time to hit the brakes. (I instinctively brake when I see an animal in front of me.) I felt a thump. When I looked in the rear view mirror, the squirrel was not moving. Stoping to inspect the damage would have been dangerous, and there is almost certainly nothing I could have done to help the animal. :(

I know the feeling. I was on a country road a couple years ago, going around a bend. The trailer always tracks the shorter distance. A dog started chasing me. I moved as far over as I could. Looked in my mirror to see my trailer tires run square over him. ... blood everywhere.. I was sick.

Yeah, its awful. I rang over a hedgehog one dark night; didn't see it until the last minute, couldn't avoid it, and it got crushed. Man, loads of animals get mashed on the roads every year. The Gov should educate them in road safety. I blam the Gov.

I had a job in the country once.

The casualties =

5 birds
7 rabbits
3 cats (one of them actually was asleep on the road and tried to outrun my truck)
1 armadillo

My wife never complained about roadkill stew.:D

Thank god it wasn't a deer or a moose!

My friend, you have helped the squirrels evolve by removing those who bear an affinity for asphalt. Tomorrow's squirrels will be better suited to life in Suburbia because of this.

No kidding.

There has been more than one time that I wanted to lean out my window and shoot the local wildlife with my 12-gauge.

Try not to feel terrible. Just think if you had slapped on the brakes, and there was a car right behind you...........

And no, I am not saying that a human's life is worth more than an animals. It 98s just that, had you caused an accident trying to avoid the squirrel, there would have been more than one injury..........

It happens. It's sad; but it is not your fault Rich.,

Sorry to hear that Rich. :(

I know how much that upsets you. But, I know that squirrel realizes you did everything you possibly could to save him.

Good grief, michel - if I had to choose between a human life and a squirrel's live, I wouldn't hesitate an instant.

Remember that car insurance ad, where the squirrels ran in front of a car trying to crash it? I loved that commercial! :biglaugh:

I have hit a few birds, a ton of possums that run away, then jump back in front of my car, and one racoon.

Unfortunately, squirrels never seem to learn that motor vehicles are a huge threat to them. They show no fear in that regard, even after they narrowly escape becoming a victim. I don't think they will ever improve in that area. Apparently, squirrel mothers can't teach "street smarts" to their offspring, since the mother's themselves lack that wisdom. :(

Based on that comment, and your comment about setting ants on fire, I can't help thinking you must be a rather sadistic individual. :(

Evolution takes time my friend. Give it 10,000 years or so to see any improvement. :D Until them, I am rooting for YOUR safety.

Yes, I remember it all too well, and it makes me sick that people find it amusing. As though, squirrels are "dare devils" purposesly causing close calls with death.

Good thing you killed that squirrel. Now there is one less to work for the squirrelly cabal (isn't it great to be able to say cabal without the word Jewish in front of it?)

I have proof that squirrels are evil. You deserve a medal or something.

I have some testomonials as well. My half-sister lost half her ear to a squirrel. Oddly, she lost half of her other ear to our dog 10 years later. Don't worry, on both occasions, she found the missing pieces and had them sewn back on...so maybe i shouldn't have said "lost"....
