I got bit by a pit bull

first of all, I hate all pit bulls, and wouldn't be opposed to putting a bullet in every one of their heads, but second off, now even my bishon-maltese wants to sniff my wound and so I'm I'm struggling to like any dogs or any animals at this point.

Help me to like dogs and animals again.

I'm very sad to hear about this attack upon you.

Where I live Pit Bull Terriers are banned by law and any that are discovered are terminated.

My only useful advice, Cooky, is to suggest that you obtain all of the TV programs about the Dog Whisperer and watch the lot. After a bull terrier attack when I was about 4 yrs old I feared all dogs for half a century until I started to watch the Dog Whisperer.

One day I was faced with a big dog and I just did what I had seen the Whisperer do, and the dog just lost interest in me.

Please do try that. :)

A friend I knew a couple of decades ago has 2 pit bulls. Two lumps of solid muscle, I kid you not.
They were very friendly and I used to wrestle with them. I could feel them holding back their stregth so as to not hurt. They just loved to play.

I'm not sure I would do the same today. (I was a firm Theist then and believed I could come to no harm).

ETA I just corrected some serious spelling mistakes. I hope no one saw lol

I understand. I was brutally bitten when I was 4 or 5 years old. Big trauma. Took me decades to overcome it a bit

Understandable you hate pit bull now. But do not forget that usually a dog takes after it's owner (and how the owner treats the dog).

I would start with "I hate all owners who are cruel to their pit bull and who pit them against other creatures"
Next I would start with "I hate all owners who are responsible that the pit bull bit other creatures"
And I think the pit bull is also manufactured to be cruel; again not the pit bull's fault

That puts the focus where it should be...on humans and not on the dog

BUT whatever you do, maybe best to avoid pit bulls
I wish they would ban them from the streets
As a pit bull is stronger than it's owner

wouldn't be opposed to putting a bullet in every one of their heads
I blame the owners, not the pit bull

I hope the above helps a little, but in my case it took decades (before age 7 a trauma is said to be very hard to overcome). I think you won't need decades like me (usually I overcome traumas quicker now I am older).

I know 3 pit bulls that I like, or more important "they like me". Because I make it a point to be very friendly to them. But I was scared when I first met them a few years ago. But I rather stay away from pit bulls. Many pit bulls have "pit bull traumas". I only trust those without any trauma.

Youch!

I have a bishon-maltese, ya know!! Never knew we were dog-brothers.
Dogs will sniff and even lick wounds. You're part of his pack and he's checking your wounds for infection. Man's best friend.

I am so sorry, really.
It must have been terrible.

Thanks, Estro. This dog snuck up on me, and I didn't even see him until he was latched onto my calf. I thought to punch it in it's forehead, but was hesitant because if that didn't knock him out, it likely would have been a fight to the death...

Hopefully you sued for damages.

I must confess, pit bulls do scare me. Even the sight of them makes me run.

That looks like a sore one, mate.

I love American bullies and find them really beautiful and very placid in general. Like other dogs and people if they aren't treated right (as in raised with love, socialised, taught properly) they can be dangerous. When they are aggressive they're hair-raisingly scary.

Blame the owner, not the pooch.

I've never had a dog, but get on reasonably well with most, including my nearest neighbour's two dogs, but I am constantly surprised by attacks involving dogs, especially on children and which often are fatal, and where the owner is 'mystified' as to how this could have happened - like this perhaps:

First picture of newborn baby mauled to death by powerful family dog | Metro News

As a child of about six, I was bitten on my outstretched hand by a Chow sat outside a shop once. Not sure what the dog thought I was doing. Apparently the advice has changed as to how to approach dogs, and I don't intend to make that mistake again. But I don't think it affected my attitude to dogs or any other animals that much - just bad luck meeting a grumpy or short-sighted one (Chows can be nasty apparently).

First, if you haven't already see a medic. You may need an anti tetanus jab and / or something for infection.

Second, as @oldbadger said, they are banned in the UK and much of europe.

Third. When i was a child my grandfather bred pedigree pit bulls. If i was missing the first place searched would be the dogs run playing with the pit bulls. Taking them (with adults) for walks Max, the prize male would always walk on the outside between me and the road, would not let me cross the road unless supervised by an adult.

Fourth. They can be unpredictable and vicious (or trained to be)

I almost got attacked by a german sheperd when I was about six years old. He was an attack and hunting dog father trained. He let me sit with it in the small closet in the dark. He started growling and he chased me while I was on all fours. Mother grabbed me just after father pulled the dog back.

I never liked dogs ever since. Mostly I stay away from them. They seem to like me every time I'm around them. I guess it depends on where you live. Pepper spray? I'm not one for killing animals and people, so maybe avoid the area where dogs are. I don't know.

Sorry to hear about your trouble. I hope it heals up.

I've had friends and family with pit bulls, and for the most part, they seemed rather friendly. But as others have already said, a lot of times it depends on the owner and how they train their dogs.

Ouch! dude... There are adamant defenders of Pit Bulls in this world, and for the most part the Pits may be ok. However, Pit Bulls tend to be highly protective of the alpha (human), and may attack even a perceived threat. I, also, have no love for the little beasties...

I like dogs where you don't have to train them not to be vicious killers... Like labs and collies...

Pit bulls.....they're twitchy little guns that can pull their own trigger.
