I have a plan to save social networking

Remember how starry eyed people used to be about the internet? Its not over, yet. I'm finally starting to see how social networking can be made to work for us instead of against us. All the pieces are now in place which before were not in place when sites like facebook and myspace were founded. We now have what we need to make a truly secure, amicable social network.

Let me share this idea with you, briefly, and outline what will be required to make it happen, all of which now can be done readily with existing software. First of all we (or I or someone) gather together some coders, a lawyer, two designers and an accountant and we put together some software. What can we do? We follow this plan which has three parts:
  • Splitting up social media into sites.
  • Each site has a friend list that enables visitors to see media on that sites but which otherwise obscure the site from strangers.
  • An automated built in service which helps friends to share hosting costs, thus reducing and nearly eliminating the cost for each email and site.

We take advantage of the new wave of automated hosting to enable individuals to easily share the cost of making individual sites which function together much like a social media site. We use common automated logins (already devised and available) such as the github login which function using a cookie. A user logs in one time, and then they can visit any site that accepts this cookie (their friends). Therefore we use it to make it so that they can visit any friend's site where they are permitted. So, instead of a single large site holding every person's data, we break up social networking into something which looks a bit like myspace or facebook but which is individual. We secure individual data, thereby letting people truly share their information with friends in a secure fashion. Its all built into the software which must be open sourced to keep it honest.

This is my new plan! Its basically just revisiting the initial wish of M. Zuckerberg and others to unite people but taking advantage of technology they didn't have. This plan will be very upsetting to larger social media companies, but honestly they're all failing anyway. They can't last much longer, and they're disappointing everyone.

I have kept this brief and haven't gone into all of the necessary details such as digital signatures etc. Basically the coders, lawyers, designers are necessary to insure its simple, fair, not stuck to a particular hosting service and that people don't have to be experts to make a site.

In his heart he'll be 100% behind me on this, however he is treed and can't come down. He has no choice anymore and has to settle his debts. I don't think there is a counter he can make to this move, however. I think the planets are aligned in my favor.

With 100+ new social media apps I am reviewing as quickly as possible. I think that one possibility is to begin with a wordpress based solution. A lot of people already make sites with that, so its one of the simplest solutions out there. What it doesn't have is friend based viewing and a way to share hosting costs.

Of interest: vero.co which an add free and private (it claims) app which does the work of facebook with no ads. I don't know how its funded.

Skyrocket gives people their own web space though it is still not split into multiple sites as envisioned. Both of these are worth looking at in the meantime.

Those two look great, however after reviewing so many I see a very strong opening for a new player for several reasons:
Internet hosting providers are starving for new business and looking for deals
  • The world needs something like facebook without selling their data off or given to governments Big data is big dangerous.
  • None of the networks I have seen (despite vero's claim) can prove that they are private.
  • We need secure online communication.
  • We need to connect without feeling like we are being watched or that our kids are or our families are being watched. We're people not science experiments.
  • We want to have some creative control of social network experiences, though this is not as important as privacy and friendship.
  • We can't accept but so much advertising.
  • We need to advertise our own products and be able to sell our own products.
There is plenty of need for a new way, and everything is in place to make it work.

My plan is proceeding. Investigations for resources are proceeding, and I'm finding good resources. I've located at least one free hosting resource that has enough built in automation to get started. Today I made a site on a free hosting service which supports login API's, and automated web site editing. It lacks the automation that most users will need, however it can be made simpler.

By the way anyone who doesn't have a web page there are ways to get one hosted for free. Here's a good one:
GitHub Pages

You sign up for a 'Github' developer account. Then you follow those instructions. You're probably going to want to install the desktop application unless you are someone who is a programmer. Once you follow the steps you will have a public (or private) web page at https://yourname.github.io not bad for free.

In addition you'll be on the Github developer network which works pretty much like any social network with friends lists, but you have a lot more control over what you can do with your account. You get the benefits similar to myspace and livejournal. I'm not sure what the limitations are. There could be some storage limitations or limitations on content.

It could be easier to make your web page. Perhaps it will be easier if the planets align, but for what you get this is simple as following the directions.
