We are increasingly isolated from each other and have lost our sense of community and empathy. It is much harder to hurt people with whom we feel a connection - to cheat or ridicule them, to refuse to help. The person(s) who doctored those pics do not feel a connection with the victims.Druidus said:TUBGIRL? Do I even want to know? I know there is good out there, and that many people are good. It's just harder to see at my age, especially at schools. The prevailing attitude towards others is animosity, and although mostly not hate, there is a disregard for the emotional health of others.
I asked Druidus to PM the urls to me, because I am a curious cat (and you know what happens to curious cats). I thought that I was already a pretty cynical person but I was surprised... shocked, but what I saw. The pictures themselves are of survivors in the aftermath of the tsunami. They're not graphic in a gorey sense but clearly show people's pain. But what upset Druidus et al so much is the unbelievable captions that someone ... I can't think of a word to adequately describe the person without the use of profanities... had written over the pictures, belittling and ridiculing their suffering in the most hateful ways. I cried when I saw them and am crying again just thinking about it.FeathersinHair said:I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to handle the pictures, if they were anywhere near what people are saying. If I may ask (please without detail) what were the pictures of? And do they indeed point to needing to lose faith in the majority of humanity, or just some of it?
I understand what you're saying. Sometimes people say/do really mean things because they can't handle the situation - it's a coping mechanism. I actually considered that possibility (anything to explain the behavior) but honestly don't think that's the case here. The comments were hateful - racist, homophobic.... I don't want to repeat them, but just try to imagine what someone might say if they gladly thought that the tsunami was a punishment from God. And then imagine it worse than you could imagine.kreeden said:Now I'm not trying to defend it , can't really explain it having not actually seen them . But perhaps it is just that some can't deal with the suffering
