I learned a new word today

Hi,

I learned a new word today, Holiday Christian, referring to believers who only show up at church at the occassion of a religious holiday, especially at the afternoon / midnight service on December 24th.

And I used to think that Christians shouldn't be judgemental. :D

I most often hear that referred to as 'cultural Christian', but I'm not sure how using such a term(either holiday or cultural) is judgmental. I know 'cultural Christians' who refer to themselves as such.

But, its in the jokes, so, maybe something's gone over my head...

I liked a joke @Brickjectivity once used. Made me giggle.

I said in Random Meaningless Announcements, "I learned a new word."

To which Brickjectivity replied, "Is it my password?"

This was a couple years ago now, most likely. But still funny.

Midnight Mass always has its amusement value. One year we had a cat that came in and sat on the altar, looking pleased with itself. And two years running we had a drunk that showed up, who even started to interrupt the proceedings and had to be spoken to by one of the altar servers, in fact the MC, a big chap with a ginger beard who is in the police. But he was allowed to stay and everyone was good-natured to him when he drunkenly greeted us as we all left, at the end of the service.

It's always Christmas Midnight Mass when this happens, never the Easter Vigil. Mind you, nowadays that starts earlier at 8pm, so less time to get sloshed first.:D

We called them Chreasters. Only go to church at Christmas and Easter.

Oh yes I looked this up and found this: What are Chreasters? | GotQuestions.org

"Got Questions" seems to be a fundamentalist Protestant outreach outfit: Got Questions

So this rather unpleasant term seems to come from that branch of the religion - which I see you have given up. Don't blame you. ;) I've always found exclusivism in religion unattractive, though it can crop up anywhere, unfortunately.

Yes, I believed I was a better Christian than they were.

Some in the GOP like to call GOPers they don't like "RINOs" (republicans in name only).

In that spirit, we could call these folks CHINOs :)

I know them as "U-boat Christians". They only surface/appear (auftauchen) for Christmas, Easter and the personal services (baptism, confirmation, wedding, funeral).
A pastor coined that word in a Christmas service. It was successful, the next year the church was only half as full. My father was one of those who felt insulted.
