I have more questions for my course, if anyone would care to answer them. :)

These questions relate to divergent and convergent thinking.

Divergent thinking (creative)
Divergent thinking is the ability to think of many original, diverge and complex ideas. People who do this easily can:
- view the issue in a different way and think outside the square
- conceptualise how ideas would work - a visually-oriented person can look at a room and "see" it decorated
- confidently express ideas and play with them
- imagine unlikely associations
- look at the issue through the eyes of someone else
- look at the situation through a range of different emotions

Convergent thinking (analytical)
Convergent thinking is the ability to evaluate and critique logically and select the best idea(s) from a range of ideas. People who do this easily can:
- critique an idea in relation to a set of criteria
- evaluate ideas logically
- select the best idea from a range of ideas
- apply technical knowledge to selected ideas

Now to the questions...

Do you think of yourself as a creative or an analytical person? What does this mean in practice? Can you give examples of your creative/analytical thinking?

Thanks for your help everyone! :jiggy:

Oops...just turned the page in my book and found something I need a little help with. My creative hat must be broken, cause I was struggling with these. Besides, it tells me to brainstorm in a group, and that's impossible to do at work cause they're a pack of uncooperative buggers when it comes to stuff like this!

Anyway, the activity is to find at least 5 new uses for existing things. It says not to be practical, and to be as creative and imaginative as we want (as I said, my creative hat is busted at the moment lol).

An example for this activity is: a cup could be a flower vase, an ash tray, a jewellery container, a measuring jug, a pendant...

My list is:
A clothes peg could be:________________
A pair of pliers could be:________________
A cloth nappy could be:________________
A spanner could be:________________
An icecream cone could be:________________
A burger wrapper could be:_______________

For the burger wrapper one I thought of origami animal, and paper hat. Any help at all would be appreciated!! Thanks! *runs away and hides her face under a cloth nappy in embarrassment*
*edit* Ooh! A cloth nappy could be a face veil...or a very small turban...only about 30 to go... :woohoo:

Jaymes

The cake is a lie
Clothes peg: Made into a duck puppet. I used to do that as a kid a lot.
What's a cloth nappy? And a spanner?
Icecream cone: A snowman's nose
Burger wrapper: Used as cheap tissue paper in gifts, if you feel like being particularly trashy. :D

EDIT: No idea what kind of thinker I am... I see a little of me in both types.

I'm not sure those are mutually exclusive - I seem to have both characteristics and sometimes combine the two for a particular problem/thought. Quite a few times, I have had ideas about a thread based on seemingly divergant thoughts - and then canceled the thread because I've found flaws in the thinkings. I envision landscaping and decks for the hot tub in detail but because of budgetary plans and priorities and a lack of skill canceled the plans.

We have a manufatured home with a "standard" design but even in looking at the model on the sales lot, I saw where improvements were required. Our master bedroom is the old game room with a new door cut to the master bath. The old master bedroom is now the office/computer room. I specified a deck that runs the lentgh of the house and has a loading gate so the stairs do not become a "task" with groceries or deliveries. The driveway was designed to bring cars to the back of the house and allow for backing up to the gate on the deck (which is opposite the back door enterence to the kitchen area).

A nappy is what you call a diaper...and a cloth nappy is one made out of cloth, as opposed to the disposeable jobs that everyone seems to use these days. ;) A spanner is a tool used to undo bolts...I guess the closest I could think of that you'd know is a wrench?

I happen to be both creative and analytical. I actually took a test, the results of which told me exactly that.

Many people have diagnosed me as right-minded so I guess that would mean I was creative. (I like purple).

Most people are both to a certain degree, but one usually is more dominant than the other. There are no right or wrong answers to any of my questions, I just need feedback from half a dozen people so I can do my report. Can you give me examples of your creative and analytical thinking?

I'm completely and totally divergent, apparently. (Does that go hand in hand with being ruled by your creative side?)

My list is:
A clothes peg could be: a dollie
A pair of pliers could be: an interesting nose ring
A cloth nappy could be: if not used, a hat

A spanner could be: Hmm... I'd better go look up what a spanner is
An icecream cone could be: a home for a frog.
A burger wrapper could be: an oragami crane

Thanks for your help everyone! I thought of a few more for the list of new uses for things:

A spanner could be: a door stop, a bottle opener
An ice cream cone could be: shell for a hermit crab

I just need a couple more for the spanner and the pliers. :jiggy:

If anyone else could answer the first question fully (i.e. with examples), about whether you are more of a creative or analytical thinker, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks! :)

The pliers could be a spanner

The pliers could be a nut cracker

The pliers could be a torture device (removing finger nails)

The pliers could be a crimp for wires

The pliers could be a staple remover

The pliers could be an emasculating device

The pliers could be used in dentistry to remove teeth (it was)

The spanner could be a hammer for small nails

The spanner (a good sized one) could be a murder weapon

The spanner could be used in birth control (held between the knees)

The spanner could be used to symbolize good car maintenance (it is - Mr. Goodwrench)

The spanner could be used as a lever to change a railroad track switch

No*s

Captain Obvious
For the questions:

A clothes peg could be a lawn peg/marker.
A pair of pliars can be a digging utensil.
A cloth nappy could be a tea strainer.
A spanner could be a ruler.
An icecream cone could be a topping when crushed.
A burger wrapper could be a base to start a fire with.

As for the creative/analytical, I don't see them as incompatible either...but if I had to choose one, I'd probably fall into the latter. I micro-analyze even comic books .

Scuba Pete

Le plongeur avec attitude...
Clothes Pin:
The best use for a clothes peg is as a fishing bobber.
Or paint two and use as VooDoo earings.
A barrett.
Book marker.
As a missle launched by a slingshot. :D

Pliers:
An antennae to replace a broken one.
A Paper weight.
A door stop.
Put a rubber band around the handles and you have a pin vise.
Mash potatoes with it.

A cloth nappy (napkin).
A carrier for your fishing bait.
Germ barrier.
Stop the leak in your boat.
Make believe saddle for your cat.
An emergency air filter for your mower.

Spanner (wrench):
Measuring device.
Two of them ties together can be fashioned into a fishing alarm.
6 of them could be turned into a wind chime or mobile.
As a weight for scuba diving.
As a prop for a window that won't stay up.

An Ice Cream Cone:
Emergency ice pack.
Extremely fun to stuff down someone's shorts.
A crude timer. Break off the tip and time using "drips".
Use just the cone as a snowball thrower.
Use just the cone as a water cup.

Burger Wrapper:
Cut up to replace the wax paper in your kazoo.
Use it to help make your cloth nappy water tight as you stuff it into the hole in your boat.
Create wrap music with it.
Fold it to make a paper boat or origami.
First volley in a food fight.

Just bumping this up because I need a few more people to answer the questions posed in the first post of this thread (the orange part below). *gets down on knees and begs* Anyone? Please? :help:
