in related news, we should no longer use the number "6." Going forward, it should be replaced with a hot apple pie. Math is finally fixed.

Shouldn't that be two pi? :D

But if 6 = two pi, then the pie would look like this:

Just this once, cuz it's one of those pseudo-proofs that are really cute:

How can 2 = 1?

a = b

multiply both sides by a...

a² = ab

add a² to both sides...

a² + a² = a² + ab

simplify on the left...

2 a² = a² + ab

subtract 2 ab from both sides...

2 a² - 2 ab = a² + ab - 2 ab

factor out a 2 on the left, and simplify on the right...

2 ( a² - ab ) = a² - ab

divide through by a² - ab...

2 = 1

a² - ab is zero, according to your assumption in the first line a = b. You cannot divide by zero.

It's a pseudo-proof for a reason, buddy.
Actually, since 0 doesn't exist in this thread, you cannot divide by what doesn't exist. Since zero, according to the OP, is merely a symbol, there should be a hole in your number line.

No, she says that 0 should be replaced with -1, so he should divide each side by -1, thereby validating his proof that 2=1.

It's not my proof, though, brahhh. :p I actually came across it here on RF a while back, originally posted by Skwim, if me remembers correctly ^_^ ; it was the first time I had seen that "proof" after a few years of not encountering it since high school, thereby quickly saving Skwim's post. But, I love creative proofs like that. :p

Meh, once you steal something, it becomes yours. This is a priceless tip for those who want to venture into the business world.

They are great and they are great for instruction too. I used to teach test prep classes for tests like the SATs/GREs. The math sections of these tests don't really test knowledge. The SATs, which is for juniors and seniors in high school (students who are frequently taking calculus, but all of whom have had something like algebra II, precalc, or trig), doesn't have anything really more advanced than basic algebra. There's no trig, no complex numbers, and about the most mathematically complicated a problem will get involves expressions or equations you'd probably see in a algebra 1 book. However, the questions do get so difficult that I've used them tutoring undergrads in mathematics. That's because they test not how well you can apply rote procedures to return an answer but how well you really understand the logic behind the ways a problem is solved. Standardized tests, however, are limited due to format. I wasn't. So I would give "proofs" that 2=1 or some such thing to make students think about what operations in algebra actually mean.

Do more research!! Im not kidding...its all about the atom. You will find answers.
Everything can be explained with the most simple of the simple. The origin is not complex.
We just became that way the smaller and further away we became from the 1 simple truth.

It actually IS one atom split a butt-load of times! All individual atoms, that actually where split from one. Research it. It wont fail you.

By the way the word: 'conscience' means 'with science'. :)
Since E=mc(squared) and all atoms and their constuents are mass then if you look at it as energy then is there just one energy?

You are the one running away from 0. Why don't you like 0? 0 never did anything to you. It's such a harmless creature. Meow.
