I can't believe kids are still bullied. I thought this generation was better. I think the homophobic parents teach their children this. Maybe it would be a good idea if children were taken away from their parents and taught by the government to be nice and tolerant.

You forget, America is one of the odd-nations-out in that regard. Many if not most nations openly allow government and religion to interfere and cooperate with each other, many European nations have state religions, and so on. And it wasn't so long ago that leaders all around the world declared that their power came directly from the chief deity or deities of their favored religions--the Mandate of Heavan and the Divine Right of Kings, etc.

Not here... I mean, we have a minor party here that's full of those crazy Christians wanting to make their beliefs into laws, but they don't even have a seat in parliament. I wouldn't have the foggiest idea of the religious background of any of the other party members. Us kiwis don't really care too much about religion

I don't think you've fully considered the pros and cons of what it is you're proposing. Attempting to eradicate bullying (which is impossible) by imposing another form of bullying strikes me as... well... ill advised?

Though, quint, I believe eradicating bullying IS possible, but only with massive cultural change and probably not within our lifetimes. And though we can begin changes now, I agree, this proposition is not amongst the best I've heard...

I see it as a matter of integration. If you are to settle within a particular country, then you follow the law of the land and not the law of traditional belief.

Yes. You do. But lots of countries have unjust laws, no? What right does a government have to regulate religions? Just because it's done, doesn't mean it's ok.

Lol. Making sure that children aren't bullied because of religious reasons isn't the same thing as controlling the religion.

Thought he government does need to control religion to a degree. Can't have ritualistic human sacrifices and what not. Multiple wives were a big no-no. Sex with children should not be allowed. Many religious "rights" are ought to be struck down in any modern society. If your kid is being a punk and bullies a gay kid at school then they should be punished the same as if they were bullying them for having glasses or wore crocks. In fact more so than if they work crocks because really I think we can all agree that the kid with the crocks should be bullied a little.

Interesting suggestion. I think government getting into the business of intervening with people's personal beliefs sets a dangerous precedent however there's a consideration to be made about how much harm or benefit a society would receive as a result of putting their foot down on an accurate interpretation of the various forms of literature or belief systems. There's a lot of legislation in place to prevent society of moving in certain directions in every country; I struggle to hold my tongue regarding what I would perceive as a gross misinterpretation of religious convictions from the individual all the way up to the highest religious and political authorities.
