I think it’s time to talk about the kitchen sink…

I know, I know. This is Everything But the Kitchen sink, but I have a question regarding it.

I know you’re not supposed to pour grease down the drain. Throw it in the trash is the only way. Even pouring it on the ground outside is bad they say, for one reason or another.

So what do you do when you have a pan full of water diluted grease? I can’t pour that in the trash without making a mess, can’t pour it down the drain. What are my options?

I have tried draining it down the sink, which caused it to block, luckily where I live the water that comes out the tap is almost boiling so manage to solve it rather easy :D

But the best way is to pour it into a plastic bag and just seal it and then throw it out normally I think.

I put it in an old plastic container and put it in the freezer. When it freezes I "pour" it in the garbage, in time for garbage day.

I don't use much grease but i have no problem pouring any waste down the sink drain followed by a kettle full of boiling water.

I know, i know, naughty, but we've never (to date;-) had a problem.

Probably better to scoop it off the water, bag it, seal it and bin it

How water saturated? If the oil is just a thin film on the water, turn your sink tap on as hot as it will get, and then proceed to pour down the drain. Run hot water for another minute or two.

Why do you have water in your grease and why do you want to throw it away? Just put the pan on the stove, boil the water away and use the grease for your next meal.

I used to have this problem. My solution has been buy a small plastic funnel and decant waste oil into an empty olive oil tin (I buy this in 2litre rectangular tins and use it faster than the rate at which I generate waste oil, so I always have an empty tin somewhere.) When it gets full it goes in the cellar, pending my next trip to the municipal waste tip, and I start filling the next empty tin. At the tip, I decant the oil into the waste oil tank and throw the empty tin into the scrap metal skip. I do this about once every 2 months, I suppose.

Most waste collection centres in the UK now provide for waste oil collection. It gets used as fuel for power gen, I think. Obviously I don't know the situation where you are, though.

This not only avoids clogging up the drains with fatbergs, but it saves on detergent and is thus better for the environment. And since I make trips to the tip periodically in any case, it's no extra hassle, really.

I was rinsing out a pan and didn’t realize I missed some grease before I put water to it.

I don’t reuse grease, don’t see the point. I’ve always seen it as a leftover nuisance of cooking red meat. Do people actually eat grease?

It's bad for plumbing and bad for sewage treatment. Also, don't dump it outside on the ground. It can choke out plant life and attracts unwanted critters, rats, raccoons, etc .

I refrigerate then bag it with kitty litter or paper towels and then off to the trash/recycling bin.

Farm style kitchen sinks are best, and now very much in fashion. I prefer a single to a double sink.
