an angelic language unknown to humankind? wow, i'm terribly interested. Have you ever heard it brotherjim?? what does it sound like?? if anyone knows any link on further reading about these tongues, i'd really appreciate it.
Yes, of course I've heard it: I've been Pent./charismatic since 1982, when I myself began to pray in tongues, and for hours a day. That may sound boastful, but it is not; it is the everyday life of innumerable such as I.
(I cannot myself imagine going a single day or two without praying in tongues. In my natural language, within minutes I run out of things for which to pray, but I can go for 3 and 4 and 5 hours in tongues and do not even feel exhausted: it's near-effortless---and also intoxicating/anesthetizing.)
How does one describe the sound of a language?? In any case, I've not mastered the English vocabulary well enough to adequately describe it. Tongues sounds like a foreign language, that's all. If you want to hear it, just visit most any charismatic or Pentecostal church: at some point, chances are better than 50-50 that you will hear someone pray or speak in tongues.
I recall my first time. I had been a "committed" Christian for just half a year or so, when a friend invited me to hear an Evangelist at his full gospel church. During the prayer part of the service a lady prayed aloud in tongues, and it was the most beautiful thing I ever heard---it really did seem angelic somehow. I went back to my non-char. church only one more time, and it seemed so spiritually dead that I didn't return (save once for a concert).
Actually---even though many might disagree---ANY person has the ability to PRAY in tongues: it is your spirit praying. But unless someone rec'd. the Empowering (AKA "Baptism"---a misnomer) of the Holy Ghost UPON them (i.e., the charismatic experience), who in the world would they be praying to, as there's no one there to hear?!? (Rhetorical; charism. theology only.)
SPEAKING in tongues is a different matter---there are these two very different manifestations, speaking and praying. When we SPEAK aloud in tongues in a church service or similar, if genuine (rare: it's usually the PRAYER tongues and the person was mistaken to pray our loud instead of quietly to themselves and God), it is because the Holy Ghost temporarily, literally filled us to bring forth the tongues message. Such can also be an angelic language, but sometimes is a language known somewhere in the world and/or known by a "foreigner" in attendance (such as in the example of Acts 2).
Insofar as more info., it's limitless. Searching on the internet should yield millions of possibilities. Careful, though, as these things of
charismata are very misunderstood and therefore more often than not, misused and even at times abused: sift, sift, sift. "Opinions" on the subject vary widely.
God bless, brother jim
