If Jesus Showed up Today...

Jesus' Second Coming has already taken place in the form of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad- the Promised Messiah and Imam Mahdi. And he had come on the right moment and was much needed, please.
Right?
Very correct. Allah will deal with those who do not believe.
Most psychiatrists are religious, though. What if they believe him, and even choose him over keeping their jobs?
You mean the psychiatrists will turn into psychotics?
That will be harmful to all other psychotics.

Yeah, he could have a fine business turning water into wine, and multiplying bread loafs and fish.
Since he was once a carpenter, mayhaps he could perform
the trick of making a building contractor finish a job on time.
Supernatural that would be.

Would he end up in a mental institution rather than have been executed?

I would treat him with respect

If Jesus showed up again, how would somebody like me know that he was the same guy that the new testament talks about? I don't know what the earlier Jesus looked like or sounded like. So the first problem is how to identify him.

The mere fact that in my experience dead people don't return constitutes pretty good justification for my thinking that the new guy is not the Jesus of Christian religious myth.

So the new guy would probably come across as another street corner religious prophet. Many (but not all) of these probably do suffer from psychiatric problems.

The first Jesus lived in a very different time and cultural environment. His message made lots of sense in terms of the Judaism of his time, particularly its more apocalyptic variants. Today his message, if delivered the same way, wouldn't have anything like the same cultural resonance.

I'd just ignore him, I guess, unless he was performing miracles that made him impossible to ignore. I'm not sure what I would think then.

I'd imagine it'd depend on how much trouble he caused.

People claiming to be the second coming are a dime a dozen. Some even have had fairly large followings.
Baha'i's leader was executed in 1850. I suppose he gathered a large enough following to be seen as a threat.
Koresh was killed in an FBI siege.
Still many are ignored by the authorities.

Secularism would not allow the "Messiah" to have any legal authority.
In the world's current state, I doubt any of the governmental authorities would allow a 2nd coming.
A world wide disaster which destabilized all world governments would be necessary I suspect.

True. But then he might face execution. Too many people and political powers would feel threatened by him.

If it's truly THE Jesus from the bible, aka god himself in human form, then I don't think he has much to fear from any political power. Or whatever other power, for that matter.

The last time that he "died", it was his plan all along to die there and have it be symbolic of something. From context, it seems pretty obvious to me that the only reason he was "killed", is because he allowed it. Orchestrated it, even.

If we're going to bend over backwards and assume that that Jesus walks the earth today, then well... then what he wants to happen is what will happen.

Now, if he does NOT have such powers - and thus would pretty much be indistinguishable from any other poor shmoe with a messiah complex... then I guess he'ld get the same treatment as such folks.

If he's harmless, he'll be put on meds at home.
If he could be a danger, including to himself, he'll indeed be committed to some kind of psychiatric clinic

A Messiah who managed to die of old age. Does not seem a common practice among messiahs.

Was this a second coming or a first coming. I've read that some Muslims do not believe that Jesus was the (first) Messiah.

That would depend I'ld think If he would work his god magic and prove himself to anyone who challenges / questions him, then no.

Reminds me of the movie "Messiah" on Netflix.

Kind of made you to want to believe but also created an element of doubt. He performed several miracles. Tricks a stage magician could probably pull off.

Makes me wonder if the Messiah showed up, whether I'd root for him or not.

Yeah, what is impossible for a person who can raise the dead, cure blindness or leprosy in a jiffy, make the lame walk or move mountains? Only that he would not do it on request (Excuse: your faith was not strong).

Threat! Nah, at that time putting a person to death was nothing unusual, it is not unusual even now in many countries. What is the worth of the life of a person?
