If Jesus Showed up Today...

Would he end up in a mental institution rather than have been executed?

I'd just ignore him all over again and hope others did likewise. I don't think he should be locked up, but if he were in Israel preaching his stuff I would hope he'd be deported...

I'm not sure, @Nakosis . On paper it sounds like he would, but there are often a whole bunch of additional nuances to the subject, too. Ones we probably can't figure out through old religious texts regarding his alleged character and statements.

I was speaking only on the mental institution thing. Me speaking on whether he'd be executed would require additional discussion.

If Jesus showed up again, how would somebody like me know that he was the same guy that the new testament talks about? I don't know what the earlier Jesus looked like or sounded like. So the first problem is how to identify him.

The mere fact that in my experience dead people don't return constitutes pretty good justification for my thinking that the new guy is not the Jesus of Christian religious myth.

So the new guy would probably come across as another street corner religious prophet. Many (but not all) of these probably do suffer from psychiatric problems.

The first Jesus lived in a very different time and cultural environment. His message made lots of sense in terms of the Judaism of his time, particularly its more apocalyptic variants. Today his message, if delivered the same way, wouldn't have anything like the same cultural resonance.

I'd just ignore him, I guess, unless he was performing miracles that made him impossible to ignore. I'm not sure what I would think then.

Given the world, he'd be mostly ignored by the majority during his advent and recognized by very few.

Some would claim any miracles are pure fakery, others would call him a good stage magician, some would follow him because they wanted magic cures for this or that and a few would follow him because of who he is.

We have no more mental institutions. Reagan eliminated them. So unless Jesus was committing a crime, he'd be just another homeless luna being chased away from the business section of town.

The state didn't care about him last time, and it wouldn't care about him this time, either. He sought no political power. The question would be how would the churches react to someone claiming to be the son of God, and performing miracles. I'm guessing they'd react pretty much the same way they did last time.

They are now called psychiatric hospitals but the dearth of long-term care options for the mentally ill in the U.S. is acute.

As of 2019 there were over 700
psychiatric hospitals

How could he be deported? He was an born Israelite. Israel could put him in jail for disturbing public peace. He could have asked for asylum in other countries, there were many.
