If something seems too good to be true

If something seems too good to be true, is it always false?

How can we know if it is true or false?

I have a reason for asking this, which I will probably divulge later, after I know more about the situation. ;)

It could be for real, as anything can be, but the chances of it not being is very high.

Not always.
I agree, not always, because unusual things can and do happen.
If there's never any red flags (even tiny ones), unfortunately, we find out when it's too late or well after certain events.
There was a big red flag:triangularflag:and then another one :triangularflag:and then another one :triangularflag:.
I am laughing ear to ear right now since he did not know that I saw all those red flags, so he kept sending them. :D
I still don't think he knows what I know but I am playing his little game to the hilt because it is kind of fun. This is actually the most fun I have had in years.

No, it was not too late for my :moneybag:because I had my suspicions and then I did my research to verify that I was right all along.

There's a funny thing about the stories humans tell themselves and the expectations that are set by them. Once you've decided the plot of the story, you're going to tend to follow that narrative even if other interpretations are equally valid. So if you tell yourself something seems good to be true (an assumption-laden expectation) that's already setting yourself up for an inner narrative of disappointment and disillusionment. It will easily follow in the stories your mind creates that "well, since it was too good to be true that means it is false."

So what story do you want to tell for yourself?

Suspicions and doubts have their purpose.

I followed the narrative alright, all the while knowing that the story could end differently than I hoped it would, and as such I was not too disappointed when it did not turn out as I had hoped. Just like a good novel, it have me a pleasant distraction for a while and hope for the future, until another story began. One story ended and another began and now I will follow that out and see where it leads.

Yes, they do..... It's a good thing I had them all along.

I think you know what I am talking about, unlike the other people reading this. ;)
I feel pretty foolish but I would have felt even more foolish if I had dished out any cash. He did not get one red cent, let alone what he was asking for. I said at one point that I am not a bank. He is not even a Baha'i as he claimed. The dating site manager said that he slipped past them for a long time because he is very smooth, and then I told the manager that he did not slip past me. :D

Stay alert. Some people are naive and trust others too much for their own good.

To me, the question is more 'based on what I know, how much do I invest in this...'

With the investment being a loose term covering financial, emotional, time, opportunity cost, etc.

I invested too much time but I did not lose anything but time, and I gained some knowledge regarding what people are capable of. Having learned a lesson, I doubt I will ever have a repeat of this experience.

You invested time and learnt a lesson. Not a bad thing to spend time on.
