If the soul is everlasting, how come what we do on limited time is important?

If we are all immortals caught in a physichal shell for just a brief moment of time, why is this world and our time spent in it so imporatnt?

Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind
Lovin' Spoonful

Did you ever have to make up your mind
Pick up on one and leave the other behind
It's not often easy and not often kind
Did you ever have to make up your mind

Did you ever have to finally decide
Say yes to one and let the other one ride
There's so many changes and tears you must hide
Did you ever have to finally decide

Sometimes there's one with big blue eyes, cute as a bunny
With hair down to here, and plenty of money
And just when you think she's that one in the world
You heart gets stolen by some mousey little girl

And then you know you'd better make up your mind...

Sometimes you really dig a girl the moment you kiss her
And then you get distracted by her older sister
When in walks her father and takes you a line
And says, "You better go home, son, and make up your mind"

And then you bet you'd better finally decide...

The soul is eternal... however we are given a life time to decide where we want ours to be.

That's not a question that can be answered with one answer.

First you have to decide what you believe in; some believe, as you have implied, that we just have 'one quick' go at things here on Earth, and then we spend the rest of eternity sitting on clouds playing a harp; others think that there is nothing after death; I personally believe that we lead many lives, each one for the purpose of learning a paricular lesson.:)

Because we aren't immortal souls caught in a physical shell. I can't speak for other religions, but that certainly is not the Christian teaching. Those Christians who do believe such are following either Greek philosophy or the dualism of the Gnostics and not the teaching of the early Church. If you're not referring to Christianity at all then there is nothing for me to answer to.

The time spent on this earth is so important because it's the one that will determine which life we will lead afterwards, in the afterlife... our eternal life. We are on this earth mere guests and passengers who come to be tested and then go back to our Creator to be judged. It's up to us, and up to our deeds on this earth that will make us lead either an eternal happy life full of bliss or an eteranl miserable life full of torture and God's wrath.

Peace be with you,
Peace
