If you ever do anything else, listen to this (especially Muslims!)

Djamila

Bosnjakinja
Zabranjeno Pusenje (No Smoking) is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most famous Islamic rock bands. This is one of their most famous, and most beautiful, rock ballads. Most is in Bosnian, but some is in Arabic.

The song is about Alma Brgic, a Bosnian Muslim woman who was in her mid-20s during the war. Her boyfriend, a soldier, died on the front lines and she never grieved. She remained strong in public, and never let anyone see how devastated she was. This expression of what we call inat (defiance, spite, etc.), and I've mentioned it many times before, inspired Muslims because it is such an honored trait in Bosnian culture. Yes, I'm being serious. Being... stubborn... is considered a good thing.

Alma kept up her show until the war ended, and once she had ensured her family was settled away and able to make a life for themselves, she went to the front lines and shot herself. And this is what, basically, people remember her as:

It's been years
Since I've seen my friend
Soldiers marched through the field
He never did come back

My country - a small dam
On the great river of insanity
Through the town she now walks alone
As the neighborhood whispers behind her
Beautiful Alma
Beautiful Alma

It's been years
Since I've heard of him
Soldiers marched through the field
She waved to him

Small town, big secret
Hidden with people
A photograph by the pillow
And a gaze into distance
Beautiful Alma
Beautiful Alma

While I watch her walk in the town
She smiles to the beggars
So alone, so beautiful
And as proud as the land in front of us
Beautiful Alma
Beautiful Alma

(ARABIC)
Bejtullah's (Kaaba's) black mantle
Brings yearning to my heart
Oh Prophet, ask the soul
To light up with love
(/ARABIC)

While I watch her walk in the town
She smiles to the beggers
So alone, so beautiful
As proud as Bosnia in front of us

Beautiful Alma
Beautiful Alma
Beautiful Alma
Beautiful Alma
Beautiful Alma
