This is a quick pole for a project i'm doing, but we can always make this out into a discussion! :D

If you feel like it, go ahead and justify your vote.

Well, thanks! ;)

Wow! I voted with the majority! (hehe first vote):biglaugh:

I don't believe that my life is productive; my children are grown up. My wife is keen to dance, to travel - and for me, that is a trial, because of my disabilities. I take far more from life than I give ( I am a medical 'parasite' ); if I was single and knew that I could give up my life for anyone else's sake, I would- like a flash. It would be pure logic.:)

I voted, "my family, relatives, friends, etc.", but in all honesty, I don't think I would be willing to die for more than about a half dozen people in the entire world. (I guess I don't have much of an extended family or many friends when I look at it that way. ;) )

If it came to something like a movie where a meteror is going to crash into earth killing everything unless someone stays behind to remote detonate the bomb, I would gladly sacrifice myself. I would think it to be selfish to refuse to die so many could live. I would let my dreams be shattered so others can fullfill thiers.

I've always found it hard to answer these kinds of questions because it's wholly improbable that I would ever be in the position of saving a million lives. No, I would probably not give myself to save a newborn---soon enough, I will have newborns of my own, and they would need their mother. I would probably sacrifice myself for my family, though.

They should be improbable ... they're hypothetical situations. ;)

I voted for the "excluding family..." option largely because I know that most of my friends would not want me to choose them at the cost of a large number of other lives.

Strange options.... none apply completely and the option to vote for more than one doesn't exist.

Since I would rather be dead anyway, if the opportunity arises to sacrifice myself so someone else can keep on living, I'll gladly be there.

Hmmm... if I would rather be dead, is giving up my life really a sacrifice?

Hmm, I will refrain from voting as one choice produces the assumption of rejection of the others...

I would most definately sacrifice myself for a newborn, as I know the pain caused by the death of one, even when it is not yours.

I would hope I would sacrifice myself for any human being...

I voted to save my friends & family, I'm assuming these people have earned my respect, I would never sacrifice myself for someone who didn't deserve it, my family & friends probably do.

I would have preferred an "all of the above option." For example, I would hope that I would have the courage to die on behalf of a newborn, 10 seniors, my family, and/or the whole world.

Chances at self-sacrifice are rare; and they usually do not come in a form of our chosing. The more common chance at self-sacrifice (not that it is all that common) is something like trying to rescue someone who is drowning at great personal risk (or rescue someone out of a burning building, or throwing yourself on a tossed hand grenade). In the short span of time that we must make a decision to help or not, I doubt if we'd have time to consider things like "is this person's life worth saving or not? Is it worth me potentially losing my own life?"

I would hope that if given the opportunity, I would risk my life to save someone else's life--anyone else's.

Peace

I would sacrifice myself for both C and D, but not A or B. I might sound harsh, but I believe I can do a great deal of good in this world, and for all I know the newborn could turn out to be the next Hitler,Stalin etc.. My point is, I am a known commodity, while the newborn is not, thus I would not sacrifice myself as I believe that if I can live for 20-30 more years I can be in the position to save more than one person. As for the 10 seniors, I know it is harsh, but they are seniors, they are close to death, and I dont believe postponing their deaths for a couple of years is worth my life, once again I believe I can put myself in the position to same more than 10 lives as well. If I turned out to be an ER doctor, I would end up saving hundreds of lives, but I also plan on being able to do more than that. But, if its the world or my life, the choice is easy, since my goal is to do my best to help the world, and without the rest of the world, there would be no point in living, thus I would sacrifice myself. As for option D, this is one time in which my emotions would overrule my thinking, and I would sacrifice myself for my family, friends, and loved ones.
