I think it depends on where you're finding your music. If in doubt, purchase your tunes. Amazon is pretty good. You pay per song, without paying for a subscription of any kind.

In the states, there's been a big deal in recent years over illegal downloading and pirating. People do have to be careful.

I only have a few thousand albums I've downloaded through PHP. They aren't going to bust anyone downloading, they want to busy people who mass upload.

I gave you a link already to the safest music downloader (and most expansive) notecard.

You don't have to download anything, but the PHP sharing software is completely free, and completely malware free (unlinke BearShare, Limewire, etc.), not to mention has the largest selection of music I've ever been able to find, even compared to pay sites.
