Image-editing shareware?

I've been trying to find a program that'll let me do basic stuff (like re-sizing pictures), but I can't seem to find a good shareware (or just plain free) one. Does anyone know of something like this?

One that I really like is called Gimp. I use it at work to create advertisements and everything. It took a little bit to figure it out, but it works really well. http://www.gimp.org/

I've also used Paint.net and I liked it also. They are pretty similar. Both are free, but Gimp has a lot of features that Paint.net didn't have (and I couldn't get Paint.net to work on my computer).

Thanks, everyone! (Frubals to each of you for your help!)

I'm looking forward to trying out each one. This'll be really useful for my RF webpage, since I can't seem to get a picture....er.... smallened? (I hate it when I can't find the right word.)

I officially declare 'smallened' should be added to the dictionary; I'm glad I'm not the only one to struggle!:D

I would try Jonny's suggestion of Gimp first it has a very good reputation amongst those who can't justify photoshop.(fairly big down load though)
if all you want to do is quick conversions(and in batches) Infranview that Jensa suggests, works very well.

I agree! It has always been my philosophy that if I make up a word and you understand it's meaning, then it is a legitimate word! At least that's what I always tell my students. :D

PMpaint is good, it just takes awhile to figure out where everything is. I consider PMpaint to be the "poormans photoshop." It can do some very impressive things, but not quite as good. As for a site to get it, I'm not sure because it came free with a software package I bought many years ago.
