Jesus was nothing more than your average person afflicted with D.I.D (Disassociative Identity Disorder) or Schizophrenia and Delusions of Grandeur. The world's foremost religion would have been founded and widely practiced, simply because no one knew these psychological dieases existed back then.

I was just sitting here reading T3gah's posts and for some reason that popped into my head.

Perhaps he was a magician like David Copperfield?
LOL!

But really, the Delusions of Grandeur would explain his claims of being the son of God. The Schizophrenia would explain him hearing the disembodied voice of God, as well as his thinking he was able to perform miracles and even believing those miracles had been performed.

Reminds me of an Irish comedian I saw on tv the other week. He said, 'Jesus went out into the desert to find his true nature...'Am I the son of God, or am I just mental?',' cracked me up big time.

'Am I the son of God, or am I just mental?'
SEE!! So I'm not the only one that thinks it's possible. Wouldn't that be amusing though? Millions of people putting all of their faith and trust and love into a religion that was founded because some schizophrenic heard voices in his head? LOL.

By the way, I'm sorry if this offends anyone on these boards, that was not my intent, I just thought it was an amusing/interesting side of the story.

Who was it that said that Christianity existed only because of the lack of a mental assylum outside ofJerusalem?

Whatever the case with Jesus's mental condition, some aspects of his message are attractive, such as "Love your neighbor", and the notion that might does not make right.

I did an internship in a psychiatric hospital. Believe me -- religiosity is a common symptom in some psychotic disorders, and a delusion of grandeur is not uncommon. Given a fertile time and place, and a bit of luck, it's completely understandable how a deluded charismatic could found a cult that would later bloom into a major religion. In fact, such cults are not that uncommon. It's the development into a major religion that requires the bit of luck.

I know Seyorni, I've found in my psychological studies that the two most Delusions of Grandeur tend to be Jesus and Napolean Bonaparte.

But that's it, if one's psychosis is not so bad that they must be highly medicated and strapped to a bed, many Schizophrenics (provided they are not Paranoid Schizophrenics, which is an entirely different story all together), or those with D.I.D can be extremely charismatic.

In line for a Piggly-Wiggly (a store chain in S.C.) I met a dancing homeless woman who informed me she was the mother of Jesus. Other than breaking into song every few minutes, she was quite nice. She gave me a hug and told me I was an angel. I actually kind of liked her.

I agree with Sunstone, though. For me, even though Christianity doesn't happen to be my faith, I celebrate the true teachings of Jesus, or at least those that are attributed to him. By true, I mean the ones that he actually taught, as opposed to what some people wish he taught.

I am trying not to take offense here at all the poking fun at Jesus, only because of the people it's coming from. :canadian:

Of course, you all have a point. The great apologetic C.S.Lewis even said that Jesus was either a liar, a lunatic, or telling the truth. Of course, I believe He was telling the truth, and I believe that for many reasons, one being the very real Jesus I have experienced in my own life. But that reason aside, I think that the miracles He did and His rising from the dead were what did the most convincing. Unless someone finds Jesus' bones, I have no reason to think He was just a mental freak. Christianity would cease to exist if such evidence were ever found....but.....still waiting!!:D
