Jensa inspired this post for me.
Now, I have worked dealing with spyware/viruses, keyloggers and trojans from all types of computers. This is the best method to prevent it for XP users (using 98? Oh well)
1)Install Windows XP (non beta version). There is a glitch in the beta version that will not allow
you to update/etc. A beta version will have FCKGW in the start of the serial code.
2)Install Windows XP service pack 2, preferably AFTER installing the latest version of MSN messenger/preferred messenger.
3)Antivirus. There are a lot of free antivirus software. But, there are some to avoid. No offense Norton, PC-Cillin and Bitdefender are all good.
4)Ad-Aware has come obsolete. You may run it and think, oh cool, no spyware after a scan.
Wrong. Ad-Aware only detects certain things, mostly old cookies, and not too many registrey keys that you have to delete with regedit. "Hkey-class/root" etc
5)I will give Jensa credit for pointing out FireFox! That was a good call.
6)Programs to avoid (common sense) are: free smileys, joke sites, online games, ICQ,
download accelrators(ugh), casino games, precision time keepers etc.
*ICQ is terrible because there is a hidden glitch that allows you to obtain anyone's password on ICQ. I will not repeat the glitch, but let's just say it is so basic a first timer could use it.
Noone needs to respond to this, but if they do, I will answer any q's.
