Interesting observation about people and transsexuals

Hi all.

Basically I like to watch pro-gaming a bit every now and then. And then I mean Starcraft 2. In any case, there is this player, Scarlett, that is a transsexual. I have noticed that in all, or at least a significant part, if her games on youtube people ALWAYS starts to discuss her being transsexual. Some people seem incredibly annoyed that people call her "her" because they think she was born a guy and should be a "he". So, my question that has nothing to do with pro-gaming is... why do people care so much about if its a "she" or a "he"?

Dont understand transsexuals and I can understand the actual argument in itself. But I dont have to understand them to respect their choice. They dont harm anyone. They arent evil or twisted. Its just a bit odd to us that arent used to it and thats all. So why does it matter so much that people just cant let it go? If she really prefer to be a she, why not just be happy for her? Live and let live.

Take care,
Kerr

They don't understand it, so they are angered by it, and so they act in this embarrassing manner.

Usually lack of knowledge, anger and fear are the main causes for this behavior, in my experience.

Being okay and accepting of something you don't understand, or can not relate with is unfortunately difficult for a lot of people.

One thing you have to remember: it's a gaming community. They're all twelve year old ********. :D

Or 30-somethings acting like they're twelve.

To be honest I'm not sure I understand transsexuals but I've always respected people's decision to be called whatever they like. What saddens me is the hateful reaction, even if you don't understand, there's no need to be mean. It just alienates them even furthur and can be damaging.

I know a thing or two about bullying and it took me a long time to get over it.

Human nature unfortunately. Ignorance leads to fear, fear leads to hate.

(And hate leads to the Dark Side.)

Lol, yeah, but there are also a lot of people who have a different view. From what I have seen I think the ones who take issue is the minority, but take that with a grain of salt.

EDIT:

When I say minority, I mean a loud minority that is too big to not be noticed :p.

Plus people like telling others how to live, especially when it differs from how they themselves live. Also, people are nosey.

Thats quite true. I have learned that ignorance or lack of experience is not a reason to be opposed to something, but I guess I can see how some people would think it is.

If people are against something, they will always bring it up.

If people know it is a controversial issue, they will always bring it up.

If people know it will annoy others, they will always bring it up.

Lol, yeah, remember that massmurderer in Norway? If you look at a video relating to him on youtube, there is a LOT of people who are supportive of him.

Maybe not 12, but they act like it. I don't even use a microphone playing online games and I mute the voices of other players because they have the sexual maturity and behaviors of a 12 year old as well.

So, my question that has nothing to do with pro-gaming is... why do people care so much about if its a "she" or a "he"?
A part of it is that it is hyper-inflammatory because it is the internet. It's not too uncommon for someone on the internet to say they would murder a transsexual for whatever reason (often over something sexual or a sense of feeling emasculated), as they do many other groups, but they only say it because they can hide behind anonymity.
The other parts are that people tend to fear what they do not understand, and because of our societies placed value upon masculinity. Even in our language there are positive terms to describe a girl acting like a boy, but only negative words for a boy acting like a girl.

Heh, I used to watch Starcraft and Starcraft 2 pro matches too. That's how I refined my game. ;)

Stopped playing due to business, though.

I think people in general are just kind of not accepting of things they're not used to. Youtube comment sections and to a lesser extent anonymous gaming communities in general are also kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel as far as class is concerned.

I dunno; I've had friends transition to the other gender so I'm kind of used to it and have thought about it a lot. Plus I had to have training on it in school to help counsel students (we had some transgender students that we needed to be accommodating of), so it's always been a curious topic to me.

I can't say I fully understand it. I don't really understand mental conceptions of gender in general. Like, for example, if I woke up tomorrow and I was a dude from then on with the same brain I have now, I'd find that to be a major problem. (Okay for like a week that would be awesome because I'd go to the gym and hit personal records, but if it was permanent I'd be depressed.) So I just imagine that this is exactly how they feel. I have a female conception of gender in a female body, but for the 1% or whatever the number is that don't have the luxury of a match, I can kind of get that it would be a major issue.

Mental gender is one of those things I can't define but it certainly feels like it exists.

Personally, I think it's jealousy because no matter where they are, the appropriate bathroom is always the closest one.
