Into the Wild

Anybody seen Into the Wild, the story of Chris McCandless who walked into the wilderness in Alaska and died of starvation? It was a good movie and the man was an interesting character. It's obvious he touched a lot of peoples lives and had a tremendous impact on them. But I still think he was a reckless fool for not preparing better. Some very simple things could have ensured his survival had he just had the foresight to research arctic survival as well as simple woodcraft.

I've read the book, which I highly recommend. I deeply admire Chris McCandless. Not many people have such strong convictions about freedom that they would just throw off society altogether. Call me a romanicist, but if he had actually prepared himself, I think it would have ruined it for me. He was brave enough to walk into Alaska's wilderness with nothing but what he could carry and the knowledge in his brain. He didn't know what he was getting into, he probably didn't understand it, but he did it anyway and that was super brave, maybe even noble, of him.

Yeah, I'm a huge romanticist, haha.

Ah, good! I haven't read the book so I'm sure there's tons of info I don't have. I understand the desire to romanticize him, his story is very impressive. But the man's original plan was to spend time in Alaska and return to write a book about it and his other adventures. Well the book was written but he didn't return so he failed in his plan. And he did make some preparations, he had books and he carried the 10 pounds of rice in with him, so he could have looked into arctic survival as well. But he was so confident in his ability to meet any and all situations that he was actually very reckless. Rafting rapids with no helmet shows that. It's a shame because had he lived, he would have continued to touch and help people.
