introduction by David40

Hi all,

Just a quick introduction--I live in California and am 40 years old. My take on religion may be somewhat controversial although I will certainly be respectful and try not to be too provocative. I studied with the rather controversial American Buddhist spiritual teacher Rama/Frederick Lenz from about 1992-1998. Although I have come to accept that the controversy that surrounded Rama/Lenz was not without some justification, I still strongly see Rama as an Enlightened teacher and in particular still practice, and gain substantial benefit from, the meditation techniques that Rama/Lenz taught. However, I accept that there are other Enlightened teachers and would consider Christ to be one--however that would probably put me into controversy with some mainstream Christian thinkers who essentially see Christ as the unique path to God and do not accept anyone else as being Christ's equal. Again, since I am new here I will certainly try to be respectful of others where I might disagree and/or have controversial views.

hi David, welcome to the forum! great introduction, you'll fit right in with a respectful attitude :)

sadly i don't know anything about the controversial figure you studied with, but in all honesty, if you got somethign positive from it then no one can say it wasn't worth it.

happy posting! :)

Just a little history without trying to scare off our new member here and to dismiss his views :), Rama Frederick Lenz was a Zen teacher who would likely have been compared to the Benny Hinns or worse yet, the David Koresh's of the world. Lenz had a history of encouraging his followers to give thousands of dollars to his ministry for the hope of giving them powers for better meditation. Some might also compare him with Koresh because of his huge charisma that attracted many female followers that he allegedly had sex with in order to "help them toward enlightenment."

Lenz died in the late '90s, I think. I'd known about him because of my own studies with the Zen tradition at the time. I have my own personal strong feelings about him, but I welcome David40 to the forums despite my own views. As you'd stated, Mike, if you get positivity out of teaching and give that positivity to others, there's not much to frown on. :)

Oh, and David........Tashe delek and welcome to RF! :bounce

Peace,
Mystic
