Hey I am new to the forums. I just wanted to say hello and let everyone know about me. I am an 18 year old male. I am in the US Navy and I just had some questions about God that I wanted to see if anyone could help with. Anyway, hello everyone. :woohoo:

Welcome! Feel free to post your questions in one of the other areas, and I'm sure you'll get lots of different perspectives. what are you doing in the Navy (like what's your job, or whatever they say about people in the Navy)?

Matt good to meet you. I hope you enjoy it here. Navymen seem to be a philosophical bunch by nature. All that time on your hands to think.

I will be a CTI in the Navy once I complete my training. That is someone who deals in linguistics.
Hi, Matt! And welcome. Hopefully you wil be able to find some answers to your questions here. I'm really interested in your background. I got my college degree in English over 30 years ago. There wasn't a degree in linguistics at that time (at least not where I went to school). If there had been, that's the direction I'd have taken. I find linguistics absolutely fascinating.

Well, I've only been in the Navy for 5 months now and I have just recently started my training in linguistics - or cryptology as it is called in the Navy. So, I don't know too much right now.

So, did you have any choice as to what you were going to train in? Or did you have any special aptitude for this area of study?

Well, I did get to choose that I wanted this job. But when I chose it I did have to take a sort of aptitude test. If I didn't pass that test then I wouldn't have qualified for this job.

Welcome to the fray, er forums! Are you studying a particular language or is this just a general study of linguistics?

Hi Matt,

Forgive me for not seeing your intro until today

Welcome to the forum; Chinese hey - that can't be easy to learn...

I knew a guy who worked for GCHQ (Official site of the UK Government Communications Headquarters which is the centre for Her Majesty's Government's Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) activities.). An Englishman, he was fluent in Russian and German; this was in the 1960's; I dare say Russian translators were more in demand then.........

Have a great time here, and I look forward to seeing your posts.
;)
