Iron Man (Possible Spoilers)

Magic Man

Reaper of Conversation
I thought it was phenomenal! It exceeded all of my expectations. As expected , Downey Jr. could not have been more perfect. The story was well done, even though it wasn't perfectly accurate, but I wasn't expecting it to be. I think with a character like this, the story doesn't have to be as accurate as with other more iconic figures like Spidey, Supes and Batman. Anyway, the only problem I had was that I wish *spoiler*Iron Man had been at full power for the final fight, just to have a real, knockdown, drag-out brawl. But, that was a minor complaint. Alltogether, marvelous!!

What did everyone else think?

I won't be able to see it until next Saturday. Glad you liked it. How was the popcorn?

Yeah, you were the main reason I made sure to put spoilers in the title. I'm not a popcorn guy, really...but I guarantee you'll love the movie. :)

I went to see this with friends and...we were all disappointed, sorry to say.

Although it wasn't a bad film it just failed to shine in any particular way. It wasn't especially funny, thrilling, stylish, poignant or surprising. By third way through I was looking at my watch, waiting for the dramatic arc to take an upturn that never really happened.

If you've seen the trailer, you've basically seen the abridged version in a much more entertaining directorial style.

I thought it was one of the best super hero movies ever made. Right up there with Spidey 2.

BTW folks, remember to stay until after the credits. All you comic book fans will not be dissapointed. :D

Dangit! What happened? Of course I was with a bunch of friends, some of whom are the type who just have to get out immediately, and can't sit still for a few more minutes, so I missed it. What was there after the credits?

Are you a comic book fan at all? What would have satisfied you?

I'm a fan of a good story. The premise of this one - that an arms mogul could somehow be in the dark about the fact his products were being sold outside his country, or be disturbed by this realization - was too hard to swallow. I didn't think they made enough of a case for his "transformation" into an ethical / moral / heroic character, and the "heroic deeds" he did were not particularly impressive. The "bad guys" lacked character as well - the film-makers relied on the stereotype of "terrorists living in a cave in Afghanistan" without giving them any reason to be there.

So, yeah, the story telling and character developing aspect of the film was extremely weak. Virtually ALL the other comic-inspired films I've seen did this better... In X-Men, Spiderman, Superman, Batman, (ooh, and of course Tank Girl!) the characters had reasons to be heroic and the bad guys had reasons to be bad. Not in Iron Man, sadly.

No, btw, I'm not a comic book fan, but I do love a good movie regardless of its origins. I thought this was a bad movie despite the excellent SFX and the best efforts of the cast - not their fault. They simply had nothing to work with.

Thank you for the response. I was wondering whether I might give it the benefit of the doubt because I'm a comic book fan. It doesn't follow the comic book story closely at all, but I might have been caught up in the wonder of seeing the character brought to life. I can see your points, and might agree with them more if I saw it a second time. I think in this case, though, they didn't spend much time on the "bad guys" because it was all about Stark and his transformation. I can see saying that his transformation wasn't believable, though. Oh well, I still love it, but thank you for your comments. :)

I think if you've read the comics (and I haven't) they might provide the "story" that was missing from the movie, and it would greatly enhance one's viewing pleasure. :)

Yeah, I think that was my question. I think that might be the case here, although, as I said, the movie wasn't very faithful detailwise to the comic book. It had all of the major stuff, and the Stark's character was absolutely dead-on, but it was updated a lot. Normally that's a risky propostion, but it worked for me here.
