Is a world without borders possible?

It seems to me that borders put up wall between nations. I feel that we should be able to wander around out planet more freely. Our distrust of each other has not only alienated each other (mankind), but also put limits upon ourselves. So, is it possible?

I don't see that working. The only real way this could be put into practice is in conjunction with a one world governing body (a thread on this was recently 'doing the rounds').

Cultures are the biggest block, and economic differentials. Besides, everyone would flock to the wealthier parts....................I can't see that working.;)

We sort of have a micro-cosim of a borderless world in our nations, and that seems to work in certain areas. Couldn't we review the best examples and take from them?

"CXI. O contending peoples and kindreds of the earth! Set your faces towards unity, and let the radiance of its light shine upon you. Gather ye together, and for the sake of God resolve to root out whatever is the source of contention amongst you. Then will the effulgence of the world's great Luminary envelop the whole earth, and its inhabitants become the citizens of one city, and the occupants of one and the same throne. This wronged One hath, ever since the early days of His life, cherished none other desire but this, and will continue to entertain no wish except this wish. There can be no doubt whatever that the peoples of the world, of whatever race or religion, derive their inspiration from one heavenly Source, and are the subjects of one God. The difference between the ordinances under which they abide should be attributed to the varying requirements and exigencies of the age in which they were revealed. All of them, except a few which are the outcome of human perversity, were ordained of God, and are a reflection of His Will and Purpose. Arise and, armed with the power of faith, shatter to pieces the gods of your vain imaginings, the sowers of dissension amongst you. Cleave unto that which draweth you together and uniteth you."
(Baha'u'llah, Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, p. 217)

So, I would say it is inevitable, not just possible.

Scott

Love it! When does your teachings say this happens?
It won't happen all at once - its a process, and we see the beginnings already. It will be a two steps forward, one step back kind of thing.

"We pray God -- exalted be His glory -- and cherish the hope that He may graciously assist the manifestations of affluence and power and the daysprings of sovereignty and glory, the kings of the earth -- may God aid them through His strengthening grace -- to establish the Lesser Peace. This, indeed, is the greatest means for insuring the tranquillity of the nations. It is incumbent upon the Sovereigns of the world -- may God assist them -- unitedly to hold fast unto this Peace, which is the chief instrument for the protection of all mankind. It is Our hope that they will arise to achieve what will be conducive to the well-being of man. It is their duty to convene an all-inclusive assembly, which either they themselves or 31 their ministers will attend, and to enforce whatever measures are required to establish unity and concord amongst men. They must put away the weapons of war, and turn to the instruments of universal reconstruction. Should one king rise up against another, all the other kings must arise to deter him. Arms and armaments will, then, be no more needed beyond that which is necessary to insure the internal security of their respective countries. If they attain unto this all-surpassing blessing, the people of each nation will pursue, with tranquillity and contentment, their own occupations, and the groanings and lamentations of most men would be silenced. We beseech God to aid them to do His will and pleasure. He, verily, is the Lord of the throne on high and of earth below, and the Lord of this world and of the world to come. It would be preferable and more fitting that the highly honored kings themselves should attend such an assembly, and proclaim their edicts. Any king who will arise and carry out this task, he verily will, in the sight of God, become the cynosure of all kings. Happy is he, and great is his blessedness!"
(Baha'u'llah, Epistle to the Son of the Wolf, p. 30)

"The House of Justice points out that calamities have been and are occurring and will continue to happen until mankind has been chastened sufficiently to accept the Manifestation for this day. 'Abdu'l-Bahá anticipated that the Lesser Peace could be established before the end of the twentieth century. However, Bahá'ís should not be diverted from the work of the Cause by the fear of catastrophes but should try to understand why they occur. The beloved Guardian, in innumerable places, has explained the reasons for these occurrences, and since they happen from time to time as explained above we should not be concerned as to when they occur."
(Compilations, Lights of Guidance, p. 128)

I think we have seen the beginnings of that "Lesser Peace" already - the Hague and Geneva Conventions, the League of Nations, the United Nations - all steps in the process.

I will study this passage further, but so far I agree with the writings, however I respectfully disagree with your assessment of the beginnings of the Lesser Peace. I think that the organizations you have listed, ie United Nations are missing a critical key. They are not truly doing it for the betterment of mankind, but the betterment of themselves.

I agree that the UNJ as it is today lacks a very critical key - the nations who are members attempt to manipulate the organization to improve their own nations - in otherwords, they lack selflessness.

But its still a step along the way. Two steps forward and one step back is STILL progress, and the monster of nationalism will not go into its cage with outmuch effort on the part of those attempting to herd it there.

Popeye,
Christianity has something quite similar: Jesus will establish His kingdom on the earth for eternity soon after He returns.

In the Baha`i Faith we believe Christ HAS returned - three times actually (Muhammad, the Bab, Baha`u'llah), and He brought the design concept, the tools and procured the building site and leaves it to us to provide the sweat and labor.
