Is Atheism on the rise? (The new Awake)

There are a few interesting articles. (One seems to be for ID which is shocking... another on don't drop out of school)

But lets just look at the first two pages. (There are a few more on atheism as well)

A group of new atheists are rising and very vocal. (This coming from an organization that actively goes door to door.)

The new atheists are best sellers and want to weaken the hold religion has on the world. (Sure, sounds good)

The new atheists are fed up with religious extremism and terrorism. (Religion poisons everything is quoted but Hitchens is referred to only as a leading atheist and not by name... odd.) Sam Harris is quoted: "We can no longer afford the luxury of political correctness." (Which is amusing to me as america is a secular country and bible studies and beliefs in the supernatural should have nothing to do with politics. Why would anyone choose to elect a politician only if the have some trait that has nothing to do with the job... lol... nonetheless Sam is correct unfortunately)

Then they set it up with: Is believing in a creator intrinsically harmful. (Which is a gross simplification... hee hee)

The next page poses the question of has science done away with god.

Then they talk about Anthony Flew. (Dawkins called Flews tergiversation over publicized in a foot note on Russel of the God Delusion and further references "See Victor Stenger, 'Flew's flawed science', Free Inquiry 25: 2, 2005, 17-18; Council for Secular Humanism ." ) Perhaps this is their first mention of Dawkins?

Then they attempt to imply that Einstein was theist. Then they segway into intelligent design? WHAT is up with this article? (ID: Intelligent design - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) ID is not science. Its crap and most Theists I know and all atheists will laugh if someone brought up ID. (Of course I guess people still debate ID here... so who knows)

Next page they say atheists and theists both need faith.

Atheists need faith in purposeless blind chance and theists in an intelligent
First Cause. (Intelligent First Cause that was caused by WHAT? Purposeless blind chance or another First Cause? Circular reasoning is circular.)

Meh I'll be back in a few but this is amusing thus far. (Well for me)

OH!

I read it now. You should have mentioned that it's from Awake! magazine because then I wouldn't have been too lazy to read it.

I thought it was atheist literature for atheists, which I normally find boring as it's "preaching to the choire" so to say.

This is infinitely entertaining, I recommend all you other atheists out there to read it :p

Yep, looks like your standard fare pro-theism argument, though I'm actually shocked that they correlated Hitler to an atrocity commited by "the religious." I respect their attempt to be even-handed but I don't really think Hitler was religious, and if he made religious comments I think it was just another method of population control to him.

Nevertheless, thanks for the laugh!

I certainly hope atheism is on the rise -- or rather, not even that; I just hope that religious extremism is "on the fall." I don't want to obliterate people's beliefs and religions, as irrational as I may find them; I just don't want to be afraid of the more scary-minded ones.

I think they are legitimately afraid of atheists. Atheists call for an end to their worldview. Some atheists, at least. I don't think they realize how atheism is a reaction to aggressive smothering, either.

I don't think attacking back is making the situation better, though.

Do not go gentle into that good night.
