Is Christian Fundamentalism Essentially Intolerant?

Is Christian fundamentalism essentially intolerant of views other than its own? Can there be a tolerant Christian fundamentalism?

What causes the intolerance seen in so much of Christian fundamentalism?

That's why I once stated that I was embarrassed to be a Christian. Not so much in this forum, but still, there are a few that they think they are right and everyone else is wrong. And I am finding out it's not just Christianity. Look up the word bigot in dictionary.com. Intolerance to other's beliefs is a scary thing.

igallandt: Just a quick off-topic question. Why does anyone choose to get a "glowing" username?. They are annoyingly difficult to read.

I'm posting from a phone and can't see it. Had no idea it was. I'll try and change it. If it's still glowing in 10 minutes, let me know.

Yes. If you believe that one belief is true and all other religious beliefs are false, you are intolerant of other views. Basically, your God is intolerant of other views and you're just following orders. I think that's how it works. At least, that's how it is in my family. *shrugs*

It's the old way of thinking. One Universal Religious Truth. It was for a while seen as an enlightened idea. But I can't see why. I think the world was better off when everyone was pagan and everyone just did their own thing.

Remember that the KKK http://www.kkk.bz/ is a fundamentalist Christian organization, and an excellent example for how the fundamentalists #1 agenda is self-preservation at all costs. They only care about the preservation of what they think 1950s America was like, with its race segregation and all. The white suburban family with no divorse, no homosexuality, and every pregnancy going to term needs healthy capitalism preserved by white men only giving other white men jobs and economic serucity.

I have known many fundamentalists and I don't know one that is tolerant of other religions. Every one of them believe that every other religion is wrong and theirs is right. They have no tolerance for homosexuals and those who are willing to accept that a woman has a right to choose. They think that anyone who doesn't believe as they do is going straight to hell.

I think that tolerance is relative. Most people, who aren't me, would have no trouble with directing intolerance towards, say the KKK, Hitler etc. Similarly, I think that Christian fundamentalism as failed to progress past a point and therefore still contains ideas that aren't really acceptable any longer. Perhaps they were "tolerant" back in the day but they are certainly intolerant now (mostly, I don't know every Christian fundamentalist :) and I know there are some on here who aren't).

All fundamental views are by definition intolerant.
It has nothing to to with Christianity or God.
It is to do with a man's attitude to other men.

Christian fundamentalists were put here to remind us of how silly we look when we are intoleratant of our fellow human beings.

HA!! This thread just gave me a wonderful paper idea. I am going to take speeches from important leaders in the KKK and the Nazi party and compare them to sermons by fundies, particularly Paige Patterson (he is currently in Fort Worth) and see what happens. I wonder if he'll give me an interview. Perhaps practices too. He certainly uses the rhetoric of fear.

In general, absolutely.

Can there be a tolerant Christian fundamentalism?
Probably, but I have yet to see it.

I wish I knew. It's these "real" Christians who make the rest of us look bad. The majority of Christians I know are good, decent people. They are tolerant and respectful of beliefs that are different from their own. But these fundamentalist types are so in-your-face about how they're "saved" and you're not, that it is enough to turn your stomach!

I don't think you need to change it to not glow. Mine's glowing and it's very easy to read. I think it's all in the color combinations.
