Is gambling wrong?

If you're not addicted, is it wrong? I don't even want to gamble. I have bought a few scratch offs in my time but other than that no. My Mom was to down to earth about money and taught me not to get scammed, she pinched her penny's and paid off our house. So we were never gamblers. Are there enough treatment centers for it,what should be done about it sense the addiction is out of control?

It's a good way to squander your money that's for sure

But it is not necessarily unhealthy or a social ill

I don't gamble though

It's fixed so that you always lose more than you win even if you do win occasionally

Unless you win something like a million quid

Why would it be wrong? Just so long as you are internally aware that you are spending money you are prepared to lose for some amusement.

Those who suffer from addiction, on the other hand, can easily ruin themselves and even their families.

The only time I ever went to a casino was in Nassau -- Paradise Island. I know the odds always favor the house, and that the longer I play, the more I will lose. Still, I put $300 in my left pocket and said, "well, this is my first time, so I don't mind spending that much just to see what it's all about."

And guess what, every once in a while, I'd win a pot, or some money from the slots. And that money, I put in my right hand pocket. I only spent the money in my left -- the money I came in with and was prepared to lose.

And I did ok. I wound up with about $310 in my right hand pocket! So up $10 -- not much, but a lot better than it could have been. And I had fun -- basically for free.

Wrongness requires context. As does rightness.

I’m willing to bet that it might be.

I’m not the only one who does the pocket thing?

I think it depends on the reasons and motives. In Biblical point of view, greed is bad. Therefore, if you gamble because of greed, then it is not good.

If I am not mistaken, some are more inclined to addictions than others, and hence it might not be advisable for those who could recognise such not to gamble, or at least not frequently. I rarely gamble with money - because of the odds of winning - and have never done so as to horse racing or similar - due to lack of knowledge. Other than this, I have no problems as to gambling, and many do better than the odds if they are skillful enough - as to card play for example.

I don't think that stupid is the same thing as wrong. Nor do I think that addicted is the same thing as wrong.

At my funeral service, I want it mentioned that I never bought a lottery ticket.

If you like a sure fire bet, become the OWNER of a casino -- the House always wins.
