It seems to me that, mainly for epistemic reasons, god is a mystery which will never be solved, although -- given human nature -- many people will endlessly seek to arrive at firm convictions about god.

Given human nature, we are all interested in the question; why are we here? And so people will always try to arrive at one conviction or the other

On solving the mystery, I think it is solved every day, through the most conclusive empirical evidence possible; personal experience.

BONUS ANSWER:
There are benefits to acknowledging our faith in any of our beliefs, whatever they may be.

In my estimation, for epistemic reasons, humans cannot solve the Great Mystery...although as you say, I'm sure many will try.

The benefit of uncertainty as to the existence/nonexistence of God is that if one is provisional with their speculations, and questioning themselves about their assumptions and their actual level of knowledge, one will be less likely to decide to kill or dispossess other people because they don't agree with your understanding of the Great Mystery.

There may be other benefits...as well as costs...to accepting uncertainty.

BONUS QUESTION: Are there benefits to being uncertain about god?

My understanding is we can know God’s attributes such as love, mercy, forgiveness and justice through His Prophets and a Messengers such as Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad, Moses, Krishna and Baha’u’llah. But we cannot know His Essence. It would be like the painting trying to comprehend the painter.

In the Baha’i Writings it says God is the ‘unknowable Essence’’

Many people refuse to accept the existence of unanswerable questions. So they invent imaginary answers in order to feel comfortable.

What do you see as being the mystery?

God will always be mysterious unless He comes down in person and says, " OK, everyone gather round. I'm God and this is how it is." Till then opinions about God will remain opinions about God. Unfortunately some of those opinions have been deadly.

God is uncertainty. But if one understands uncertainty would they not know God.

The intellect is an idiot that will eventually self discover itself as being an idiot. Like an idiotic pine needle pretending it manifests the tree "I think" OMG...... To funny. Darwin evolution has zero to do with intellect it has it trapped in on itself.

What's the point then ?

There is God. We have no direct channel between Him and us because we have not got the capacity to do so.

But God sends Prophets to communicate with us as Intermediaries offering advice and counsel to us to guide and assist us.

We can learn a lot of wisdom from these Teachers about how to achieve happiness and inner peace and peace amongst ourselves.

Interesting thread!

Here's a quote I kinda like -

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom the emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand wrapped in awe, is as good as dead — his eyes are closed. The insight into the mystery of life, coupled though it be with fear, has also given rise to religion. To know what is impenetrable to us really exists, manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty, which our dull faculties can comprehend only in their most primitive forms—this knowledge, this feeling is at the center of true religiousness.”

Love the quote especially about the awe and One is dead if one can’t feel it. I feel awe everyday all day and lucky every moment to be able to live and learn from everyone. Thanks. Great quote.

I think my point is more that faith allows us to percieve the impossible. I'm not suggesting to be a dork about it but when faith works you know it.

Yes - he wasn't your average scientist!

The other quotes are worth a read too ...

Not to mention the gorgeous images.

Cheers!

BONUS QUESTION: Are there benefits to being uncertain about god?

The answer is blowing in the solar wind ;). Actually the Bible. Through my faith, I found that God is not a mystery at all. He's a lot like us, but he's all powerful, all knowing, everywhere, etc. unlike us. The mystery is how everything gets destroyed and re-created in the second life. For example, will I be able to visit someplace I could not visit in this lifetime or will everything be different?
