This is a rhetorical question, right? The Abrahamic religions themselves teach that their god is greater than their religions. Their god-concept by definition is supreme.

religion tends to be a collection of words and the practitioners are expected to nod their heads

Does [the Muslim's God] Khuda, live only in the mosque?
Is [the Hindu's God] Ram, only in idols and holy grounds?
Have you searched and found Him there?
You imagine that Hari [Vishnu] is in the East, and Allah is in the West;
But search for Him only in the heart-that is where Ram and Karim both live.
Which, then, is false, the Quran or the Vedas? False is the man who does not see the Truth.
It is One; It is the same One in all. How can you imagine that It is two?
Says Kabir: 0 Lord, every man and every woman are Your own forms;
I am the simple child of Allah-Ram; He is my Guru, my Pir
Brother, where did your two gods come from? Ram, Allah; Keshav, Karim; Hari, Hazrat-so many names!
There may be many golden ornaments, but there is one gold; it has no two-ness in it.
Merely for the sake of exposition, we make of the One, two.

Hindu Scriptures declare "God is greater than the greatest and smaller than the smallest"

According to Hinduism and Vedanta, Brahman is religion; Brahman is [the concept of] greatness; sarvam khalvidam brahma, “all this verily is Brahman” - Chandogyopanisad. So to us that means Brahman is greater than everything. But there’s a catch... how can anything be greater than itself? What’s north of the North Pole?

Though Form is Brahman, Brahman is not Form, otherwise you would limit Brahman
Hence the Wise also declare "Brahman is beyond Form and Description"
But we use Form and Description to realize it is beyond these
Knowing this, it's obvious "there is a catch":D

Yup. If "it" (no matter the it being contemplated), was born or can change, it is perishable and therefore that "it" is neti neti (not this, not this), meaning it is not Brahman, this is not Brahman.

Knowing this, it's obvious "there is a catch":D

As a fish rises to the fly, ye old swamini (who has no difficulty seeing red these days ;)) must inquire. What's the catch, stvdvji?

Edit: Oh, I see it's related to Jai's post. But Jai' knows Brahman is beyond time, space and causation so he knows his North Pole analogy (a location in space) is probably melting as we speak. What with climate change 'n all. :D

:D. What a beautiful and creative analogy you made of this. Thank you.
:D. In the Grand Scheme of time, to worry about climate change seems futile. But I try to reduce my part in it, just because it feels Dharmic to do so.

The God of Abraham isn't limited to Abrahamic religions. As the psalmist sings, "For God is the King of all the earth; Sing ye praises in a skilful song." Psalm 47.7

The problem is that our ability to sense the divine on our own is very primitive, like an "eye" that only sees shades of light and dark. We don't know much, and what we know often gets confused on our own.

My religious studies professor told me of a Jewish student he had who was looking for God. The student ended up in Buddhism. He would go on about how he had discovered there was a source which underlied everything in the universe. And I'm thinking to myself, "wow, he found God in Buddhism of all things." Yet when my professor asked if he had found God, his answer was no.

Is it perhaps that we have false ideas about God and his nature, so that when we encounter him, we do not even recognize him at times?
