Is it just because I'm getting older...

I think it got a little better since the 90s. At least the late 90s anyways. I wish the songwriting quality would be as good as 70s rock was. I always wonder how much better those bands would sound if they had the production quality of todays rock.

Problem is, genuine creativity wells up from the underground, but is soon watered down and bottled for the mass-market.

Right. The industry cobbles together and cranks out one bland, unoriginal one hit wonder after another. The depth and innovation that gave us the iconic classics of yesteryear is dead. Music is art and art comes from the soul. What plays on the radio today is soulless.

There is certainly no musical depth or innovation in anything mainstream today.
(Not that I have heard anyway)

It's very disapointing.:(

...or has music (especially rock) really turned to **** over the past decade?
Much longer ago than that. In the 80's I sold my guitar and started collecting only Classical. Nowadays I've added techno, but pop music... no way. Can't remember when was the last time I listened to top 40 radio, but I turn it off in my wife's car when that *** comes on, asap.

Yer old & out of touch.
I should know....so am I.
I can only go by what my daughter (19) listens to: modern "junk", Beatles, Broadway
The variety suggests that there must be some merit to the new stuff, even if I don't get it.

I never was a big fan of the music in this generation or the generation after the 90s. My niece is the same way. She likes the Beatles and most of the stuff I was into when I was her age.

It's just because you're getting older. Everybody says that eventually, and they have been as long as there's been shared culture.

It's like your mom's cooking. You are aesthetically "imprinted" by the emotional experiences at key times in your life and everything else seems shabby by comparison. Nothing compares to the music you were listening to when you first start to "get" the music.

If it helps, the kids listening to Lady GaGa will be echoing you in twenty years.

I only buy vintage stuff and listen to the oldies stations on the radio. They are starting to play 90s music (at least my station). That makes me feel old - I'm only 31 and the oldies station is playing music that I listened to in high school.

I do enjoy local music wherever I go, and I almost don't care about the style. Those are folks who sing/play from their hearts. Usually.

If I'm middle aged, you're so far over the hill you can't see what's past you with the Hubble.

These damn kids are pushing my moosik back to the oldies station because they are driving the industry.

Lady GaGa is a talented musician, btw. She just has no taste in clothing.

You got dat right.

haha

I do feel like I'm getting old, though. My body is starting to fall apart. The only non-gross thing I can talk about is that my eye-sight is leaving me and I have a memory like a fish (because of meds). For the first time in my life I need glasses. Or so I think. I can't see, but my regular MD tested me and I'm 20/25, but he sent me to the eye doctor anyway because I've almost gotten into a few car accidents...
