Is it just because I'm getting older...

...or has music (especially rock) really turned to **** over the past decade?

well we have new technologies to deal with...some use it because they can.
and every other person out there calls them self a music producer

my problem with music is when producers depend on that freaking auto tuner and suck the life out of the performance...instead of working on the performance , and compress their mixes so hard my ear drums feel like they are being squeezed. mp3's are the necessary evil in the music biz...until the next thing comes along.

It's kind of funny. When i was in my teens I liked stuff like Chicago, Hall and Oats and Journey. Now that I'm pushing 40 I like bands like Godsmack, 90's NIN, Nonpoint, Pink Floyd, Nickelback and Staind. I am a big fan of classic rock. But there are several modern rock bands that I love now. Aaron Lewis doing a 'country' album called "Town Line" now has my interest. Hope to here more of it other than what they have been playing on the radio.

We need to have a second movement like you older guys had back in the 60's and 70's that put out great music. Like the peace and love movements.
But that was born out of reaction to war and hate...
wait, I guess not much has changed after all in the world, but counter-culture movements may be harder to do now as everything feeds back into the connected culture at the speed of the internet.

I don't know if it's a case of music becoming worse or just that there is so much more rubbish produced now you have to look harder to find the gems. There's a real trend for producing sheer mediocrity and making some quick cash, so the real musicians are harder to find. To find anything decent now involves trawling through music sites and youtube and filtering out the rubbish.

Yes, but I don't think too much on rock, more like rap and pop... It's all become crap.

Modern Metal is great though, never heard any very old metal.

I dunno... The mainstream stuff is obviously often below par, but so will most things aimed at the lowest common denominator be.
I find that a lot of the more alternative stuff like prog metal and the like can be quite innovative and interesting.

I'm in my teens and even I agree. I hate the radio. Especially the crap the pop industry cranks out (not that I ever liked pop in the first place) Namely the "repeating-the-same-line-over-and-over" mess that is Justin Bieber. Or talentless blobs like Ke$ha. Or just the "way-out-there-physco-that-everyone-claims-to-be-a-unique-role model-no-matter-how-many-times-they-wear-a-meat-dress" Lady Gaga

I've gone from one extreme to another.
But always go for the artist who sings for what he believes.

Simon and Garfunkel...Cat Stevens....Jethro Tull...Creed....Audioslave....

John Denver...Johnny Cash....Harry Chapin...

But yes, in recent days there seems a trend to make money.
Put together a musical theme and a catchy lyrical hook....

Rap turns me off.
They read short shallow poetry over borrowed backgrounds.

It's not just you, imo the music has gone way downhill in the last decades - since the advent of rap, really. Velvet Revolver was promising, but alas, it's too little, too late. That said, there are some good acts around, but you will have to search hard to find them. The alternative scene is still quite interesting. If you're into "howl at the moon" music, Psyclon Nine is amusing.

Brace yourself....
