Is masturbation a sin?

Nope, not in my book. I was going to say it depends on whom you are thinking about at the time, but I don't believe thinking about anything is a sin. it can lead to sin, but is not a sin.

Hi jgallandt, this thought I have to disagree with, doesn't the bible warn us about lustful thoughts being adultry ?...

But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Mathew 5:28..

Would that not go for the thoughts that go with masterbation also.

The 1st chapter in James gives a different picture. 14. "Rather each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire 15. Then desire conceives and brings forth sin, and when sin reaches maturity it gives birth to death."

No way man; it's a vital function of sexual release. I see nothing wrong with pleasuring oneself. The Hindu's think that to waste Sperm weakens a man, so you should re-absorb these vital fluids back into the body. I have. Tastes OK.

I also think that looking at a woman with lust in your heart is different then going behind closed doors and 'taking matters into your own hands'. If God had not intended for up to relieve our tension, he would have given up little short arms so we couldn't reach it. :biglaugh:

Hi jg, I see what your saying about what james says, but I don't feel that James is saying it's ok to have these thoughts, the picture I get from what James is saying, if our thoughts are going to cause us to sin don't go there. say for talking sake a beautiful women passes you by in the street, and you start thinking about her sexually, what do you do with that thought, do you switch it of straight away or do you have her in bed in your mind before you know it. [ not you personally of course ] . when does it become sin, I believe when one has mentally pictured themselves in bed..Jesus said that is adultry.

GC, I won't disagree with the most part. A married man should, if he masterbates, should be thinking of his wife. A single man.. That's another story. And I would much rather a man relieve his tension manually then rape someone.

Let me add this. A married man should be thinking of his wife, if he is dreaming of his neighbor, it can, as James stated, lead to sin, in other words, actually doing it. You think about something long enough, you have more of a chance of actually doing it.

Not a chance. It's a gift if nothing else. Otherwise all men would be utterly dependant on women. And that could get very, very expensive ;) ! jgallandt no man masterbates to his wife. Those that say they do are naughty, naughty liars.

May I suggest that you speak for yourself? Unless, of course, your able to read minds... In which case you would apologize for calling me a liar. ;)

I love my wife so much, that I would never do anything to disrespect her. Fantasizing of another woman is disrespect. She might not know it, but I would, and that's the important thing.

No, I do not believe that masturbation is a sin.

Think of it this way. Biologically, the body must get rid of sperm. If you don't masturbate, you will have nocturnal emmissions. The body must find a way to get rid of that accumulation of sperm.

Why would God design our bodies with a need to get rid of it, but then tell us it is wrong to do so?

You answered yourself with the "nocturnal emmissions" statement.

From my personal experience I think it's wrong since it leads to sexualy immoral thoughts. And it changes your mood... well at least it changes my mood. I become more agressive and generally feel down. If you don't masturbate then you get rid of it in your sleep. Sounds nasty but it's not as if it happens every time. So I think that's how God designed our bodies (males at least) to get rid of it. I believe if you give into sexual temptation and masturbate then you are giving into sin. I know it's extremely hard to quit and I still fail occasionally but I believe it's important to try and break out of the primitive brain that demands sexual satisfaction.

Nothing wrong about it. If I had a partner who masturbated while fantasising about other men then I probably would be concerned but admittedly only because of my own insecurities. If a relationship is meant to be then I want to feel completely secure, and same for my partner, and I can't see why fantasising leads to bad things so I'm all for it.

Aqualung

I think it is. It takes something that was meant to be shared between you and your spouse, and instead shares it between you and your hand (or other things, if you are so inclined). It devalues sexual intercourse. It also causes one to lust after things.
