Is prostitution "immoral"?

Is prostitution "immoral" to you, and why or why not?


To me, it's not. As long as the person doing so has made the choice to do so fully aware of what they are doing and is taking proper precautions against spreading disease, then I don't really see an issue with it. Now, pimping and coerced/forced prostitution is an entirely different thing to me and I do find those wrong. Prostitution itself though, no...I don't believe it to be "immoral".



And yes...I put "immoral" in quotes as I find morality to be highly subjective.

prostitution goes back to our most distant past. when it comes to morality, in the religion of Babylon, sacred prostitution was practiced at the Gates of Ishtar. so our perceptions of sexual practices definitely change with the times and with cultural contexts.
today, when it comes to the industry as a whole, there is no doubt that there are plenty of cases which display how women are being taken advantage. no doubt that many women find themselves practicing prostitution because of the circumstances they found themselves in.

It's "moral" as far as all involved are consenting adults and nobody's rights are violated.

The impact on emotional and psychological health, however, is questionable. But again, that is a matter of personal freedom, choice and responsibility.

Consider the types of values this sort of thing reinforces. It's worth asking the question whether or not we want to reinforce those values. Saw a report on a study somewhat recently in a news magazine about how prostitution reinforces objectionable views/treatments/values towards women... and how these can translate into an increased probability of objectionable behaviors towards women. Not sure I can find the article again, though.

It's both when prostitution (and the includes the porn industry) becomes mainstream it pretty much affect how women are generally viewed. We become objects, tools to be used and nothing more.

One, not all prostitutes are female. Two, how is it much different from a masseuse?

Also, flipping burgers at a fast food joint can be degrading, making themselves subject to dietary whims of others in exchange for soulless material gain. Fast food is pretty unhealthy. Would that be an immoral profession as well?

They subvert themselves so as to pretend to become something which entertains us.
Are actors even more so the meat puppets since they dance to strings pulled by writers & directors?

Working in a fast food restaurant is good honest work, prostitution always has been and always will be seedy. Not many fast food places require you to exchange bodily fluids with a stranger.
