Is Santa Claus the mockery of Saint Nicolaus?

I think not. I think that this is a reflection of Nikolaus, that this is Nikolaus’s trace in our world.

She sounds reasonable and cheerful but she doesn't like the idea of drag queens as a theme.

There. The previous sentence sums her up in under 20 words. Oh, and at the end she has a genteel swipe at Ms Harris for being seen on TV with drag queens too ─ which I guess is a hint about how she intends to vote.

I thought the French carried off the opening ceremonies wittily and surprisingly, and drag queens were only one of the very many ideas in play. I join in the general applause and cries of Bravo! for the show.

No

Saint Nicholas/ Santa is a combination of mythical people such as Thor, Hermes, Saint Nick and some sort of woodland character

It originates in Germanic/Viking where Sinterklauss ride a 8 legged horse Sleipnir, and kids would leave carrots out, as to not anger the horse

They would leave their boots by their fires, and wake up to gifts

The 8 legged horse became 8 reindeer
Sleipnir became sleigh
Sinterklauss became Santa Claus
The boots became stockings

The rest of Christmas is very much pagan
Yuletide, Yule log, carol singing, celebration of Yule are all ways to celebrate the winter solstice

The tree a symbol of nature
You make offerings to the tree, make offerings to nature

You put a 5 pointed star on the top of the tree, a symbol of Lucifer the light bringer

You put reefs, cinnamon and holly and mistletoe around all pagan and used in various spells

Oh and the Christmas dinner is Roman, which was the day of Saturnalia, which occurred on the 25th December, which was a day of deprivaty, orgies and feasting

And they would decorate a tree with ornaments to symbolise the pantheon and their family

The church appropriated various pagan, Germanic, Norse, traditions and also many Roman traditions, and decided eventually on 25th December as being Christs day, Christsmass, Christmas

The star became a symbol of the star in the stories
The tree lost meaning, the ornaments and gifts lost meaning

And I’m the modern day Coca Cola, completely rebuilt Santa’s image effectively, Santa became a marketing campaign for Coca Cola and so he went from being Green to Red

The Santa Claus of today may owe his name to St. Nickolas and both may have a reputation of giving gifts but beyond that they share little resemblance.

Santa Claus seems more about controlling kids through bribery than anything to do with mocking Saint Nic in my view

I will disagree, commercialization with its promotion of buying is an aspect of modern christmas but there is much more to this myth than the commercial or of some saint who could resurrect three butchered children. This myth weaves in magic, hope, peace and wonder. It draws from multiple cultures and beliefs creating a beautiful myth. To focus on only the aspect of controlling is to misunderstand the power of this myth. It pulls from the European folklore of rewarding those in correct relationship.
