Is smoking a sin?

Jesus Pipes

So people like to tell me that smoking is a sin, siting below scripture:

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your Bodies." 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

The bible says nothing specific about smoking, and it seems like it's just a "sin" made up by man. Is smoking a sin? If it is, are fatty foods sins? Staying out in the sun too long a sin?

Bro, it's what comes out of your mouth that defiles you, not what goes into it.

That being said, smoking is pretty bad for you and it's addictive. It probably doesn't offend God, but its negative consequences are punishment enough.

Sin is knowing God's will and purposely choosing against it. An ant cannot commit sin.

Humans know good and bad, they know indifference, but they don't know God's will, yet...

What is good and bad apart from God's will, even though God's will wouldn't even change a thing. Who decides good and bad, and what makes their opinions convert into facts?

I'm sure ants are far more intelligent than humans for not having a controlling moral force around their species, well that is IF they don't, which I'm sure they do, otherwise they wouldn't be working, they wouldn't have decided what they're doing is good, as most of them do the same thing.

If healthiness is what is determining your sense of sin, then I'd say weed is probably the only thing you should be allowed to smoke.

As for the Bible hinting on smoking, it doesn't say much.

Certain activities are unskillful, or more specifically, they are inconsistent with a person's other desires.

If a person desires health of their bodies, health of their families, health of their environment, reduced per-capital medical costs of their nation, then smoking goes against those desires.

Smoking is not a sin or forbidden in my faith...but you've no doubt heard that tobacco smoke is not good for your lungs or for the lungs of your friends... Years ago I had begun smoking and resolved to quit.. It took me actually two years to quit.. Nicotine is very addictive. The smoke stains you skin and fumigates your clothing so you stink to non-smokers... After you've quit awhile your sense of smell will return.

also you are making some cigarette execs happy by smoking...

fatty foods aren't good for you either and neither is staying outside in the sun too long ... skin cancer being what it is. So no you're not sinning you're just doin yourself in.

Sin came into this world because of one man's choice. He had to choose between LIFE and DEATH and he chose death instead. Given this, I would like to believe that anything we do or behaviors we cherish that has the potential to destroy ourselves or others is sin.

It's not strictly a sin, just not a good idea and against one's better judgement.

That said, to some people, deliberately causing yourself physical harm can be considered a sin, and since smoking is bad for you, that's why a few people consider it to be wrong. But strictly speaking, there Bible does not strictly prohibit smoking in the same way that it prohibits telling lies, stealing, or murder.

So this touches on what I think is very important to this discussion. Many Christians smoke, and do not fell bad for doing such a thing. They like it, and have no intention to stop, even for the health reasons. If they are in fact committing a sin, they don't feel bad for doing such a thing, so they cannot repent for their sin. Does this mean they could be going straight to hell for smoking? Maybe it's just a case in there is no acceptance for ignorance of the law. But to be honest some of these rules here are quite ambiguous. Even throughout the New Testament, passages hint at the presence and use of a pipe. Some may argue it was just incense, but again not very straight forward.

Why should we try to avoid death? A forlorn hope, given the sentence imposed by your god, apparently. How can any activity that is potentially harmful to our lives be compared in any way to the sentence god imposed? As a true believer I should think that your most fervent hope would be to die and be reconciled with your god?

With the new health laws, hell is the only place you can still smoke in the afterlife, apparently some of the saints and angels duck down there during tea breaks.:run:

Seems to me that, in Isaiah's vision, the temple was filled with smoke. Which stands to reason, since the whole purpose of the temple was to do burnt offerings for atonement. They used a lot of incense and charcoal. If our body is a temple, surely it was meant to be similarly filled with smoke?

I think some religions consider smoking a sin because of potential to harm the body, and maybe also because they believe it doesn't purify the body. Obviously, us Pipists disagree. First, there is absolutely no indication in the Bible, OT or NT, that smoking is bad, just as there is no indication that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol is bad. In any case, Jesus preached tolerance and acceptance, so even if you don't agree with us that he smoked a pipe (and therefore wouldn't view it as sinful), it is doubtful that he condemned it.

Seems to me that according to this scripture, doing anything that needlessly endangers your bodily healthy is a sin. Smoking. Drinking too much. Eating too much. Being out in the sun too much without sunscreen.

But I would hardly take a Neopagan's word as an authority on the matter.

In the common Christian perspectives, the body is thought of as the Temple of God and so anything that harms it must harm the Temple of God and is a sin.
Smoking can definitely harm the body and must be a sin.
