Is the pen mightier then the sword?

As far as I can see, it's ideas and philosophies that have changed the world. Yet violence still carries on, leading us in a circle of hatred and bitterness.

What do you think?

Good point; though I think the Islamic fundementalists have proved that the pen is in no way mightier than the sword - unfortunately..........:(

The sword can merely end a life: a pen can change it forever! Just like swords, pens evolve. Where they used to just reach a few, today they reach untold millions on the internet. A far greater reach than any recent weapon has enjoyed.

That's nice. Doesn't change the fact that I can kill you with a sword, but not with a word. Swords change the fate of men as quickly as words. The question is, that if swords are the result of pens, is the might in the pen or the sword. I would argue neither. It's in the men that carry them.

I would expect no less from you. When reason runs it's course, your last avenue will always be violence. I choose peace... and a pen.

How's the weather there in LaLa Land? You missed the point, as usual. I'm not even going to waste my time trying to clarify it for you.

Perhaps, I am not the one who missed the point. Peace is almost always the best solution.

It is worse for a political prisoner in Egypt to be caught with pen and paper than with a gun.

I agree with NetDoc. Go ahead and stab with a sword - but a single word may poison one's reputation so badly that life's not worth living.
But, at the same time I'm wondering whether terrorists fall solely into the "Sword" category. Their actions undermine faith in the government and thus spread their political message - thus, a clever attack on a strategic point, like the London bombings, like the WTC is a lot more effective than just mindless violence. I suppose we can say that the talking sword beats all...?

"all truth passes through three stages. first, it is ridiculed, second it is violently opposed, and third, it is accepted as self-evdent."
