Is the world wide web ended?

Saw this link on my phone this morning;

It said Google declares the end of the world wide Web.

Only the publisher "unherd" is apparently unherd of by me.

But it wouldn't entirely surprise me if it's coming to an end with all the algorithms employed to limit what one may see in their searches.

Do you think the world wide Web has ended?

No, I do not.

It is conceivable that something else may become more popular and take some considerable chunk the attention that is currently put on the web.

It is just as conceivable that it won't happen.

I preferred the Internet as it was about 25 years ago

I think that was the internet's golden age

The Internet in say 2001 was much better than it is today

It was more organic, more natural, more authentic

Make that 35 years.

In 2001 we already had AOL and the Internet wasn't only for the geeks any more.
The web wasn't only for publishing papers any more.
The web killed net news (which is superior to forums).
It was more organic, more natural, more authentic
It was in 1991.

But to the original question: where is the protocol that is replacing http? I don't see it.
The web is still kicking. It may be replaced in another 10 years or so with a virtual reality protocol, but dead? Death called and the web said "Not today.".

Google searches these days are all about ads. I can search for anything and I'll see ad after ad after ad that has little or nothing to do with what I'm looking for. Recently I got so annoyed by this that I went to Bing to find what I was looking for.

I don't mind AI questions and use them often. But I do mind Google setting itself up as a barrier between me and what I want to find. Given that Google has evolved from "don't be evil" to "evil is profitable so we'll shove it in your face and up your ***" my trust in them or any large corporation is tending toward zero over time. I am not a sheep to be sheared by mega corporations.

Have you tried DuckDuckGo, which tends to be less intrusive than Google Search? I have this as my Home page and tend to use it for most searching although I sometimes use Google too, especially as to Google Images. I do have various ad-blockers and hence rarely see many ads - even on my Android phone.

Obviously the world wide web isn't dead.

But its present incarnation and the toll it took on the psychology of civilization is nothing to be proud about.
In fact, I'ld even say that the current trend is increasingly a danger to democracy

Thanks for the reminder. I have them as a search option but mostly forgot about that site.

Sounds like the newer AIs will deliver approximations of what you are searching for, possibly tilted towards including some kind of personal curation, or a tendency to give users what the AI ‘learns’ they prefer.

I find that very frustrating. Some people like to explore and how can we do that with AI cutting down our options for exploration? I sure hope it comes with an off switch.
