Teen who allegedly crumpled up 'back the blue' sign charged with hate crime

Should this be a crime at all? This officer should be embarrassed by this nonsense.

“The teen, identified as 19-year-old Lauren Gibson, allegedly crumpled the sign in a “destructive manner” and started to smirk at Carter in “an intimidating manner,” according to the officer's statement. ”

Any officer who can be intimidated by a 19 year old girl’s facial expression is not fit to be a police officer.

Far from it however Utah has some generalized ideas of what could be considered a hate crime so under their law they could charge her any of the following sub-sections of the law

Utah Code Section 76-3-203.3

Versus my state California which is very particular as to what hate crime is

how can it be a hate crime? How is it a crime period?

burning the flag and kneeling for the national anthem will soon be a crime, if some people have their way

sad state of affairs

Edit: ewwwww, I just noticed this was in Utah

i guess that explains a bit

I also posted their hate crime law in my post. It is really general. A sign attached to a building (that is in support of something) can be perceived as a hate crime.

after reading the utah code, I can only conclude that the cop (we had other names for them when I went to Berkeley) must be a wimp

No. It's not a so called hate crime. And shouldn't even be considered as such.

In a police state like China, disrespecting the party or their authorities at any level is a hate-the-state crime. So how is Utah any better than the Chinese dictators?

Quite true, but destroying property and baiting a police officer -- or anyone -- is anti-social and very unlikely to advance her cause.
In my day people stuck flowers into the bores of police rifles; a much more effective tactic, I think.

Hate crime? I don't see hate as a crime, so much as mental disorder.

If running off with someone’s rainbow flag is a hate crime, or peeling out with your car over some BLM graffiti in the street, than sure, this is a hate crime.

Just for starters.
1. You dont have the right to damage any sign, I dont care if it is proX for X, or no X at all.
You do that you are committing a crime.
2. To think you have the right to express your anger against a cop, or any other being for doing their job, and in this case where the cop had issues with your friend, is mere stupidity.
period.

There is a huge difference between expressing yourself and destroying propperty, and challenging a policemen who dont need your childish behaviour.

I wish the world could make laws against stupidity, and give offenders hard labour for a week to clean up their streets with a Dunce cap on their heads and a sign on their backs reading, "I am stupid!"

They weren't intimidated, just butthurt. They're pursuing these charges to be petty and vindictive.

Agree with both of you. This is simply an abuse of power by resentful cops who didn't feel in the least intimidated. I suspect that the use of the word intimidation is a necessary part of the hate crime allegation, the equivalent to "I was afraid for my life, so I shot," but "I was intimidated, so it's a hate crime."

From How a 19-Year-Old Got Charged with a Hate Crime for Teasing a Cop :

"In the affidavit, the responding deputy reported that Gibson stomped on the “Back the Blue” sign, crumbled it up “in a destructive manner” and threw it into a trash can—“all while smirking in an intimidating manner. But Brysk, who helped advocate for Utah’s hate-crime enhancements, which passed into law in 2019, said the key phrase there is “intimidate”—which is language included in the statute. While the model hate-crime statute that the ADL drafted for Utah was meant to protect victims of certain races, religion, or sexual orientations, he said the version that eventually passed in Utah also applies that protected status to law-enforcement officers. Louisiana passed a similar addition to their hate crime statute in 2016, at a time when, as now, protests against police violence were visible in the state and nationally."

I agree it's not a hate crime. Just abuse of authority.

Oh so he's not fit to be a police officer because he's scared of a girl? I thought girls are liberated now and equal to men in every way imaginable including being just as strong and capable. So much for that. It always seems to go out the window the second things get real.

Regarding the sign, the article noted that they found the sign somewhere along the side of the road and kept it in their vehicle. They still had it when the police pulled them over for speeding, and it was at that traffic stop that this incident occurred. So, it wasn't in the context of any kind of protest, at least not at that time and place. She was just mad because her friend got pulled over and cited for speeding. It's the age-old trope about cops and motorists who try to flout traffic laws.

We have something in Australia called Cancel Culture which means that certain views can be silenced, even if it is against other laws to do that. I guess we are following China in that regard and so should not complain against China.
