Is Trump just testing his power? Will Congress pass the test?

Trump's nominations are, for the most part, uninspiring to horrible. Most of them would be very difficult to get through Senate confirmations in a Senate composed of strong people who understood their job.

"Their job?" you ask? Yes! The Founders never imagined that the legislative, executive, and judicial branches were coequals. Their intent, made plain in the structure of the Constitution, was for Congress to be supreme. That’s why Article 1 is about Congress—literally the first branch—and its powers. And on such things as important administrative appointments, Congress (in this case, the Senate) has the final say. Yes, the President may nominate anyone he chooses, but no he cannot dictate that his nomination is going to be accepted.

By asking (okay telling) the contenders for Senate leadership that he expected an immediate recess, so that he could make (completely unnecessary) "recess appointments," I believe Trump is testing his will against all those Senators who've been groveling at his feet these past 8 years -- and he is sincerely expecting them to cave, giving him what he wants and believes he deserves: totally unchecked power.

Will they do it? Are they so cowed in fear of Trump that they will hand him the reins and say "lead us where you will?" Are there any Senators who will "man-up" (I use quotes because I suspect that there are women more likely to than men) and remind him that he runs the executive branch -- but he is not the government?

Trump has great power. If anyone resists his demands,
he can order the Justice Department to investigate them
for crimes. Personal wealth can be wiped out by such
legal attacks. That's a helluva tool.
I heard an interview with a lawyer at a firm that is
specializing in helping Trump's targets plan their exiting
the country to avoid his vengeance, ie, investigation &
prosecution. This isn't like celebrities making idle threats
to leave the country because they're offended or fearful.
These are named targets of Trump's.

Oh I'm sure they'll find their own little communist and totalitarian country to flee to. It's all the rage these days.

That might be your preference.
But there are better choices. Some even enable
immigration for people with ancestry from the country,
eg, Ireland. Austria, Denmark.
Are you unconcerned that a President can have a
personal enemies list, & persecute people on it under
color of law, using government resources?

What world leader doesn't have their little agendas. If one's denies it then it's obviously lies as it's just human nature to be wary of those around you. Particularly in high profile situations where the stakes are different than that with the common person.

I wonder who said keep your friends close and your enemies closer? I think it was Sun Tzu.

You can't see it, yet. Total control is what Trump wants. A Congress that bows to his whim. He already owns the Supreme Court. A one party state?

Your guy is the only totalitarian in the room.

I guess we should be glad that there are at least some of us who do see it -- all too clearly.

If it was actually totalitarian I can say to you with all due confidence , that Democrats wouldn't even exist.

In which fictional world?
Ask Snowden when he became a Russian. Oh and all that was during the Obama Administration in case you haven't reviewed the history.

Of course I'm pretty sure you would think that's all fictional so it probably doesn't mean much to you.

But I thought I'd put it out there anyways.

Regarding the OP:

I am sure there are some Senators that want to be responsible. I am just as certain that there isn't much acceptance for those in the current form of the Republican Party, nor in the current Senate.

Trump is indeed testing them, but he may not even realize that. It has been a long time since they have kept sight of their Constitutional mission.

Trump is an idiot. He's in a no win situaltion with these terrible picks.

If the senate decides to vet his picks there's little chance his choices will pass, except Rubio. He might offer second tier insane picks, and we will see. But if insane picks get these important jobs we can expect them to fail miserably. How will that work in the next two years? At some point republicans in the senate won't let this idiot do what he wants. They want a future in government, and self-sabotage isn't how to do it. Trump has 4 years, if he lives tat long. Do they really want to give up their careers for this guy?
