Is YouTube done?

At a time when animators and other artistic content creators are being screwed over by you tube, it seems that useless and downright fraudulent content is being promoted and flooding the service.

Reaction and drama and trash.

Wack-job conspiracy theories and sooooo many strident end-of -the-world warnings one wonders how the world is still here...

Can anything be trusted anymore? I mean, granted that 99.99% of this is bogus, what of the .01% that MAY be real?

How could one tell? What if some whistle blower had some genuine alarm to sound, how would he be believed?

Or even heard?

I think the recent (and previous) controversies and issues regarding how YouTube works are largely a result of how quickly and unpredictably the environment develops. YouTube has certainly made mistakes in some of its practical decisions and communications but not necessarily any more than any other company. The problem is that their customer base, especially with the content creators themselves, are naturally a large group of natural communicators with a massive audience which means the complaints about YouTube (legitimate or not) can be easily exaggerated.

The nature and (perceived) quality of the content isn’t largely YouTube’s responsibility. They offer a largely open platform precisely to encourage a wide range of material. As users we can pick and choose what we want to watch.

Actually fraudulent material will be both against YouTube’s rules and also against the law in a whole load of jurisdictions in which it could be watched but the relevant authorities (YouTube or beyond) can only respond to that if it’s reported to them. This is part of an issue much wider than YouTube where the pure scale of data out there makes it impossible to formally monitor it all in any effective way. After all, this is a relatively small forum with good quality moderation yet actually illegal material is sometimes posted and can’t be caught and removed immediately.

I don’t think trust is a uniquely YouTube issue either. There’s nothing special about that site. It is almost literally a tube, just the medium for whoever wishes to use it. The real trust issue is that so many viewers grant irrational trust in someone just because they’re on a particular media – the same issue applies with TV and newspapers. With your whistle-blower example, there’s no valid reason to give someone any more or less credit if they use YouTube to publicise their claims as opposed to any other non-formal route.

Youtube has certainly made many mistakes and can be argued favors big companies instead of content creators (even YouTube partners) because their copyright system is a bit ****ed. And many YouTubers have actually had to pay out of pocket to challenge false DMC claims, for a goddammed hobby! And that was only because they were "big enough" to garner support in the first place. YouTube Heros didn't exactly help that much, although I could see what they were trying to do. A bit of tweaking and it might have gone down better.

I wouldn't mind a competitor for the platform because YouTube has monopolized it and are perhaps a little out of touch because of it. But eh, they're not the worst site or dying or whatever.

Although I agree. YouTube Drama and reactions are often trash. I do kind of like the "elders react to" vids sometimes, though.

I think it all depends on what you're looking for.

Wait, was YouTube supposed to be used for anything but fun? It's explicitly so you CAN watch conspiracies, watch video game walk throughs, watch the creepy or funny or plain dumb videos people want. It's also fantastic for falling asleep to, at least for me.

Yes, if you just keep following links it gets into the weeds pretty quick!

I love it for fun entertainment while working- music, books on tape, interviews, stand up-
But there is also a lot of really useful content- DIY help on cars, appliances etc have really saved me a couple of times!

The ads are getting a little much tho.. before you know it we'll be having to pay AND watch commercials, like happened to cable TV!

Yes the ads have gotten crazy. I can be watching some low level unknown poster and still get three ad breaks in one video.
