Israeli envoy calls for criminalizing antisemitism after NYT cartoon
Excerpted...
The only way to stop antisemitism is to criminalize it, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon told reporters in New York on Monday.

“The time for talking and having a conversation is over,” Danon said. “What Israel and the Jewish community around the world demand is action - and now."

Danon, speaking on the sidelines of the United Nations Security Council meeting, said that those who engage in antisemitism "must be punished. Whether it is here at the UN [or by] political leaders, editors, policy pundits or college professors, it does not matter.

“Antisemitism should have no place in our society," he continued. "Until it becomes criminal, this bigotry will persist; it will fester. It is only a matter of time until it erupts again in violence and bloodshed."

Trying to stop hatred by criminalizing it won't work.

What stops hatred IMO is humor.

Was this the cartoon with Trump and Netanyahu?

I've no problem with jailing Nazis, but what Israel clearly wants is for criticism of it to be illegal. Whenever Zionists talk about anti-Semitism, what they generally mean is anti-Zionism. To them, there's no difference.

How hard is this to understand?

Israel cannot impede free speech in the USA. But Trump and his supporters can try, and maybe successfully. That's where the danger to free speech comes from. Trump and the conservative Republicans.

You think the Democrats aren't just as ardent Zionists as the Republicans?

Remember the whole fiasco with Ilhan Omar?

About half of your states have anti-BDS legislation. I'm no fan of the Israel boycott but imposing penalties on those who practice it seems as anti-free speech as you can get.

I haven't heard any hysterics from the free speech fundamentalists over that yet.

Clown world logic:

Trump supports Israel
Israel wants to ban anti-semitic cartoons

Nazis like to ban things so Trump is a Nazi that is emboldening White Supremacists.

There are fine people on both sides of the Israeli Palestinian issue

If anti semites commit crimes, they should be punished. Having an anti view about anybody for any reason is free thought and free speech. If what they say hurts your feelings, don´t listen.

Why stop there...criminalize any thing that is or might be considered racist or hate speech.....but anyone.....about anyone...oh wait...forgot about the Constitution..... oh what the heck....get rid of that pesky little document too while you're at it...it just gets in the way of most US politicians these days anyway.....now Israel wants to get in on the act......sheesh......

China and Israel are some ways at opposite
ends of the spectrum, yet both try to find
ways to control what people in other nations
can say.

I agree in principle. Disagree in practice.

Freedom of speech is a cornerstone in this country.

What stops hatred IMO is humor.

My grandparents always told me how the Red Army saved them by being funny.

Good times.

My goodness..

Almost as if these caricatures don't exist in a vacuum and there was some kind of attack on a Synagogue last week.

Nah that can't be it.
God I hate those entitled whiny Jews.

The notion of absolute free speech in the US is more fantasy than reality. There are a variety of types of speech that are subject to a priori restraint and are not protected. One of them is a type of speech that incites violence or is a true threat (not just generic hate speech) or constitutes "fighting words". In other countries, other forms of speech are not protected (such as holocaust denial in 16 countries.

With the confluence of anti-semitic speech and actual violence Danon is drawing a connection and saying that the US should recognize the relationship and not protect anti-semitic speech as per its own set of exclusions.

I don't agree with BDS but of course they have every right to free speech.

Drinking too much alcohol does far more damage than hate speech. I think we should make the drinking of alcohol a crime. That would stop this bad behavior. I even have a catchy title for the legislation. We could call it "Prohibition."
