UNESCO: Dig not harming Temple Mt.

The UNESCO report on the controversial Antiquities Authority excavation near the Temple Mount has concluded that it is not damaging the holy site. Nevertheless, the report calls on Israel to suspend the dig to allow for international observation, Israeli officials said on Tuesday.
The report is expected to be presented to UNESCO's director-general, Koichiro Matsuura, on Wednesday. The report, which was compiled by a four-member team that visited the site last month, finds that the excavation was being done with complete transparency, and in no way damages the Temple Mount, according to Israeli officials.

Live excavations

Israel has video cameras to film the excavations in a bid to assuage Muslim anger over the project.

The cameras are to broadcast live footage of the archaeological excavations near al-Aqsa mosque while work is under way, will remain on 24 hours a day.

the Mughrabi Ramp

Why must excavations be conducted next to the Temple Mount right now, of all times?

"...Israeli archaeological work for an access pathway in Jerusalem’s Old City does not threaten the Al-Aqsa Mosque and complies with professional standards..."

The report by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) also says Israeli excavations comply with "professional" standards.

The Israeli authorities say the dig is meant to salvage archaeological remains ahead of the construction of a new pedestrian walkway to the religious compound located in East Jerusalem.
But the report says that the excavations should be limited to the stability of the structure needed for the consolidation work.

...A spokesman for the Jerusalem municipality has said there would be a public consultation process before any construction works begin.

Here is the situation:

The ramp was damaged and partially collapsed in 2004 from snow and rain damage. Israel is going to repair the ramp. Israeli law requires that before any construction can take place, an acheological recovery must be made. This is done to ensure that nothing is lost or damaged during any construction.

UNESCO inspected the excavations and said everything is being done professionally and there is no danger to any of the Muslim structures. The reason why UNESCO is asking that the work be stopped is because their standard for the construction is lower than Israels. They say that "the excavations should be limited to the stability of the structure needed for the consolidation work. "

Israel is trying to protect any artifacts that are there as required by Israeli law. So since Israel is doing a more complete job than UNESCO thinks is necessary, they ask for the digging to halt. That makes sense...

The bottom line:

The UNESCO report says all of the work is being done safely and professionally and it poses no danger to any Muslim structure.

I don't what is happening there and i hope everything will go smoothly.

"While recognising that the archaeological works under way are being carried out according to professional standards, the mission expressed its concern regarding the lack of a clear work plan setting the limits of the activity, thereby opening the possibility of extensive and unnecessary excavations," the UNESCO report states, according to officials with access to the findings. The UNESCO report calls on Israel to suspend the project and draw up a new work plan in consultation with Jordanian authorities and the Waqf, a body that oversees Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem.

Israeli archaeologists began excavations at the site on Feb. 7 to salvage artefacts before planned construction of a walkway leading up to the complex, where the two biblical Jewish Temples once stood.
