ISSUES and CONCERNS

There are circumstances in this world we all should be aware of, especially when it comes to religion.

In this thread, please share information about events that are important for people of your religion and that you feel everyone should at least know about.

Lets educate ourselves and form a more in-depth picture at the currents and situations in our world today.

The first concern I have to share is from Iran. There the government is cracking down on internet access, which is absolutely astounding. Despite appearances in western media, Iran is one of the most open Islamic societies in the world. Women are free to live and work more or less how they choose, and the overall level of satisfaction with their society is quite high.

Now the hardliners, who were only elected because Iranians are as fiercly proud as Americans and didn't appreciate foreign influences in their last elections (You say NOT to vote for the hardliners, well suck on this Bush! - that's the kind of attitude they proudly have). Now they're shutting down excellent internet blogs and blocking Iranian access to certain sites on the internet.

It's something I'm concerned about because it's a step backwards and these sorts of things, in today's world, always have a rippling affect that affects everyone.

Another irritant from Iran. This might be how they are free to dress today, but it could be changed. :(

Iranian girls wear colorful veils and a traditional mantu as they walk in Isfahan, Iran. A draft law being considered by Iran's parliament will encourage the wearing of strict, black clothing to protect the country's Muslim identity, something traditionally frowned upon by Iranian women. The bill raised fears among women, who wield voting power in Iran, that the hard-line government led by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is planning to crack down on social freedoms.
