I'm working on a novel, have been since February of 2021 (actually I've been planning the universe/series/plot since even 2015 and have attempted to write it a few times, but Feb of 2021 was when I started writing The Real Thing)

I'm 290 pages into my first draft (of just basic description of how it's all going to play out) and still haven't wrapped up the ending in the first draft (I have an idea of how it'll end, but haven't written it out in description). Instead, before I got to the ending, I decided to do a 2nd draft of what I had so far. I put it into somewhat decent prose, made renditions, expanded on some things, deleted other things... I'm 270 pages into my second draft and I'm just a little ways over halfway through the story.

It's going to be a long one, I expect somewhere between 400-500 pages if I'm honest. And I want to do at least two more entire drafts to make sure it's how I want it. So... these next two drafts after I finish this second draft and wrap up the ending? It's going to be hell. I'll be shoe-shining the 400+ page dog crap twice in a row. That's what coffee is for i guess!

To be fair I started this second draft merely four months ago, and a lot of the stuff I didn't have much to go on in my first draft. I think having more tread in the next two drafts will make it easier and quicker.

Very proud of myself.

Oh, and did I mention? This is Book 1 of 4...

Around 68,000 words in my second draft (I'd say a couple thousand words are footnotes). As for how many I need to have? As many as I need, I suppose. I'm trying to shorten it to make it less convoluted but then I find some places I want to expand on and I end up with more words.

I've taught hundreds of authors. In your case, I'd recommend a fun, short little book called "Save the Cat".

Have fun, and good luck!
