Jan. 6 panel to vote on urging DOJ to prosecute Trump on at least three criminal charges

"The Jan. 6 select committee is preparing to vote on urging the Justice Department to pursue at least three criminal charges against former President Donald Trump, including insurrection.

The report that the select panel is expected to consider on Monday afternoon, described to POLITICO by two people familiar with its contents, reflects some recommendations from a subcommittee that evaluated potential criminal referrals. Among the charges that subcommittee proposes for Trump: 18 U.S.C. 2383, insurrection; 18 U.S.C. 1512(c), obstruction of an official proceeding; and 18 U.S.C. 371, conspiracy to defraud the United States government.

It’s unclear whether the select committee's final report will recommend additional charges for Trump beyond the three described to POLITICO, or whether it will urge other criminal charges for other players in Trump's bid to subvert his 2020 loss. The document, according to the people familiar, includes an extensive justification for the recommended charges.

To justify incitement of insurrection, the report references U.S. District Court Judge Amit Mehta’s February ruling saying Trump’s language plausibly incited violence on Jan. 6, 2021, when a mob of his supporters besieged the Capitol in a bid to disrupt congressional certification of his loss to Joe Biden. The report also cites the Senate’s 57 votes in last year's impeachment trial, Trump’s second, to convict him on an “incitement of insurrection” charge passed by the House.

The select panel's report also notes that, in order to violate the insurrection statute, Trump did not need an express agreement with rioters — but rather, simply needed to provide “aid or comfort” to them.

A select committee spokesperson declined to comment.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I keep telling people that Trump is above the law as it is with all major elites in the 1% club.

If they do ever finally decide to put Trump on trial, it'll definitely be a circus.

Depends on the terms of the trial. If Trump gets his say and also gets to subpoena who he wants, it may well look like that.

True, although I was thinking more about what it would look like outside the courtroom. The world media would be camped out, along with gaggles of Trump-lovers and Trump-haters all in close proximity. I imagine there would be a heavy police presence.

Maybe. Although I think eventually, the energy surrouding Trump will start to tire.

The problem is that there are sooooo many deniers of reality on the Republican side. Also if this goes to a jury there are still too many brainwashed Trump supporters out there. A Trumpista could hang a jury forcing a retrial. It would be very difficult to keep all irrational Trump supporters off of the jury.

How do you know what they have or haven't accomplished? Have you gotten a copy of the report and taken time to read it?

Or are you practicing your clarvoyance and making a prediction that could come back to bite you in the ***?

The Watergate investigation took two years before there were arrests and convictions. I wonder why you would expect the process to go faster given this was a large set of events, were so much broader and over many more states, and the large number of people involved.

The work after Watergate led to new laws that prevent presidents from certain types of fraud, which applied to Trump in this investigation. So this is importatnt is creating more laws that prevent another Trump-like person from future acts against the USA.

During Watergate a fair number of Republicans still had a conscience.

Have you watched any of the Congressional reports? Are you unaware of how Trump whipped the crowd into a frenzy, promising to march with them? Are you unaware of how Trump did nothing for hours when his job as Chief Executive was to oppose such actions that threatened Congress?

 That's what Trump did, not what they have accomplished. Everyone has seen it.

So again I ask...Its been near two years. What have they accomplished? Lay it all out there.

A lot of people are still in denial about what Trump did. They got rock solid evidence showing that it was the case. I see that you are still having trouble with facepalms.
