Jazz

[Halcyon]

Just to frame my question, I'm not a big music fan and I know next to nothing about, well, anything in the music world.

I don't own any Jazz music, but whenever I hear what I think of as Jazz on TV commercials, in films - I guess film noir would be the kind of music I'm thinking of - or in restaurants, I always enjoy it.

Does anybody who is into Jazz have any recommendations for someone totally naive to the genre, any artists or compilations etc that you think would be a good place to start? To see if I actually like the real stuff rather then the odd snippet I hear around and about.

miles davis - kind of blue is often regarded as the #1 classic jazz record. in any case, it's a good place to start. very cool, very spiritual. here's a youtube clip.

i'd also recommend some kind of coltrane collection.
