Jesus - Does it matter if he existed or not?

Depends on who you ask. If it is just a story, then, as Paul would say, many's faith would be in vain and we are to be pitied most among all people.

Would you mind explaining this a bit more to me please?
I don't see why it makes any difference myself :)

Isn't the story enough?
I think it does matter to people who value history and society. otherwise, why does anything matter at all?
Is the story of Alexander the great enough without the historicity of it?
if historical study of key figures in world religions such as Jesus and Muhammad reveal new surprising data, how would that effect societies and the world? stories are nice, but every once in a while you get the person who wants a bite of a steak which is more than nice and moderate on calories.. some people need a bite of a filet mignon.

If you're just looking to live well then maybe the story is all you need. Then again, I imagine there are many that are living well without giving much thought to the life of Jesus. I guess my answer goes beyond just living well on earth. I'm sure you know enough about Christianity to know where I'm going with that.

Other than living things, does anything have an intrinsic value or just the value we attribute to it? I don't know.

I'll have to come back to this :)

I like the story! it can stand alone as far as i am concerned, i dont care if its true or not I Just like the story. I expect it will be on TV at Christmas(the winter festival if i be PC about it) and i always watch it. I always liked Robert Powel as jesus in the series Jesus of Nazereth. great show that.

"Jesus of Nazareth" (1977)

P.S. i am in the shallow end again Stephen Lol

Well, historically I soppose not. His followers believed he was real and an entire religion has cropped up because of that. And since the bible itself disproves the concept of jesus as a messiah and people believe in him anyway I guess it doesn't matter if he was real or not.

I don't know Stephenw, there are alot of people hinging their existences to the facts and the hope that he did exist and that he existed exactly like it was depicted in the small amount of knowledge that was written about him.

Though if it is stories about sacrifice of strong role models performing miraculous feats that people need to put their faith into or pattern their life around, may I suggest Superman. More has been written (and illustrated) about him than Jesus and his continuous adventures constantly inspire and excite.
